I just had my 4.6 rebuilt in my 98 f-150. I Thought it was going to be cheaper than buying another engine. WRONG. $987 engine kit $300 head work, $300 timing set, $100 water pump and oil pump, And as a bonus, seams like the head bolts and crank bolts are a ONE TIME USE deal. I had to buy new bolts $100 (has to come from Ford don't ya know) $75 for block vatting, and I'm sure theres some other things I'm forgetting andyway's, you can buy a complete engine ready to drop in from $2100 so do yourself a favor and save alot of headacks. not to mention what it cost me to have it done when just swaping engings was only $350. Hope this helps.

 

Nearly every car has stretch to yield head bolts and crank bolts. $100 is cheaper than a new motor (when crank bolts fail, it's usually pretty catastrphic).

 

I was quoted $2600 for a replacement 4.6 crate motor with the "notorious" shallow spark plug thread heads...and a 12 month warranty as a crate motor installed into the factory vehicle it was intended for.

A crate motor was far cheaper than rebuilding to stock. Then again, I'd probably not rebuild to stock and do some wild cams, valves, and stroked crank and pistons, and supercharger, etc. if I was to rebuild the motor, gaining a lot of value over a stock rebuild.

 

I have a 98 that had a 4.6 and a couple years ago I bought a 2001 5.4 crate motor from KarKraft and swapped it. It took some time and energy, but the payoff was absolutely worth it. There is a post here which details the whole swap.

I think I had about $5k total in it and I would do it again.

 

If I was just going to rebuild to stock, then I'd get a crate since a lot of places will give you a nice warranty on the motor.

If I was going to the trouble for a rebuild, then I'd get a little more work done.

 

Believe me guy's. If i'd knew beforhand, I'd done a few changes and I almost went with a 5.4. Wouldn't have cost but just a little more, I just kinda wanted to stay stock with everying original, But hey, I got a new truck now hehe. Thanks for the replys.
