Thumbs up 4.6 throttle body / egr passage cleaning ;Pinging 90% eliminated

Wifes 98 Expe with 97K miles was pinging badly , so based on all the searches of this forum; i pulled the throttle body and sure enough egr passages were clogged with carbon. Cured 90% of the pinging and runs much stronger. One thing i did notice when searching this site is the lack of pictures so i posted the link. Hope is works.

My wife has a 98 expedition with the 4.6 also. Pinging very badly I used Sea foam in the injectors and put a can in the fuel tank. I suspect the egr ports are carbon coated as well. Did you replace the gasgets on the throttle body when you put it back on?

hey thanks for the pics

I need to have that done badly on my 98 4.6. Power seems to have gone down the past 25,000 miles.

How much would a dealer charge to put plugs/wires on and clean the intake/egr ports to stop pinging and restore power?

Would it be possible to remove the EGR and clean without having to remove the whole TB elbow or would it be bad to have the carbon drop down in the upper intake?

I have a 2001 4.6 with 40K and I'm not having any problems, I'd just like to do this as preventative maintenance or have they changed anything from 98 to 2001? Thanks.

When i look into the throttle body after removing the intake , i could see small mounds of carbon build up. if i had not seen any mounds i would have maybe tried removing only the EGR valve but in the end i was glad i removed because i know all is clean

ive been meaning to do this too....ill be damned though if i cant get the air intake off the throttle body though. you guys use anything to get the tubes/hoses to slide off easier? i tried but the damn thing just wouldnt budge. my engine's pinging horribly (at least, thats what i think it is) and after seeing fordpwr's 100/40 blockage i wonder if i have the same problem with my s-cab.

Getting the EGR inlet tube loose was a little tricky. I sprayed down with WD40 let sit for 15 minutes and used a 10 inch cresent wrench to break loose ; didnt have a open end wrench over 1". To break the rubber hose lines loose i took a long skinny regular screwdriver and pried up between the nipple and hose in a couple of different places; once it start to break loose a little it should slide right off. The job is a little time consuming 5hrs but iam slow because i am a perfectionest.
Hope this helps

Try cleaning the small wire in your mass air flow sensor and your pinging will more than likely be gone.

thanks ford power, I got it done last night but discovered you dont even have to disconect the egr exauhst line, just remove the two bolts that connect the egr to the upper intake. After getting the upper intake off I dicovered severe blockage in the passages. One was almost 90% blocked and the other was about 60%, I would deff. check this out if your trucks got higher mileage. Did the job in about an hour.
