sport trac with 4.0 wont rev past 1600rpm

Hey guys ,,, just a quick question... We were driving along today at cruising speed and I had to step on the brake for someone going to slow and when I went to speed up it wouldnt go anymore...it slowed right down to a crawl!! We managed to limp back going about 20kms a hour.!! you could put it to the floor and all you could get was about 16 to 1800 rpm... but it would fluxuate. Anyone experience anything like this??? Any help would be appreciaited

Thanks guys!!
