1997 f-150 v6 rear end vibration

My girlfriend's brothernlaw has a 97 f150 with a 4.2 v6, auto. the problem is with the rearend. I beleive that the pinion bearing has gone. the seal leaks slightly but when you physicaly move the shaft, you get lateral movement. Iwould like to know the instructions for rebuilding the rearend. I beleive it's an 8.8. I've doen a 7.5 in a ford bronco II. Is it the same style and I need the parts required. I hope the ring and pinion are not damaged. I just beleive the pinion bearing is worn.

Thanks

FWIW, a common cause of rear end vibration on older vehicles is a right side axle bearing. I would look into that before rebuilding the rear end.

When do you get the vibration?

I'm going on 220,000 miles and the rearend has never been touched, including fluid changes. My dad bought the truck brand new and I know he never touched it before I bought it off him. I guess I'm just lucky?

Knock on wood by the way. I should get those new gears put in and change the fluid now.. shouldn't have said anything.

Hmmmmmm.......I've got a '97 V8 (not that it matters in this case), but I get a vibration when starting forward (traffic light, stop sign, etc.). I seem to notice it when I'm making left hand turns. Wonder if that has anything to do with it. Hadn't thought of the axle bearing.

If you have limited slip, change the fluid and make sure you use the recommended fluid and modifier.
