hey 4.2L Guy i got a 98 auto reg cab long box and i get 20 mpg highway and 16-17 in the city the first thing i would be checking is do you have factory plugs in it aftermarket plugs are junk in ford they dont like em and are your wires somewhat new. Check your coil if your not sure start your motor and put on a welding glove and pull each wire off the coil and see if you see a good arc from the coil pack to the wire, the exhuast hurts you with out a dout in the city i live in toronto canada so its smog and start and go too. you should get atleast 17 to 18 highway with a standard you should get better then me thats for sure. the only other thing i would suggest is to check your o2 sensores if the through a code every once and a while the will take you down 1mpg aswell and clean your throttle body aswell. oh and the air filter upgrade. i had one it didnt do anything for power and just hurt gas millage. More air going in equals more fuel going in.

New Factory plugs
The more expensive wires at your local auto parts store or factory
Check O2 sensors
Check coil might be going aswell
Clean Throttle body
K&N air fitler NO GOOD (i run a fram platinum)
Rear Brakes dragging (Facotry PBrake cables arent that expensive but if you use it everyday it shouldnt seize)
Tire Pressure the harder you run em the better MPGs I run my fronts are 40Psi and my rears at 38psi.

What's wrong with OEM Motorcraft wires? If you are fussy and want OEM plugs, you should also use OEM wires.

I use an Amsoil air filter. It filters better than stock, doesn't use oil like a K&N, and its cleanable.

You shouldn't run more air in a tire than the maximum stamped on the sidewall. My P-rated tires say 35 so I run 35.

thank you for the suggestions! and i have stock pluggs still the same wires as the day off the show room floor.

you said more air going in means more fuel going in... so that should give you more power right...

and as for the factory parking brake i just replaced it yesterday. works better then it did before and all i did was change the cables.

i run my tires at the exact same you do.

and like i said i am not hard on this pickup. it runs amazing and it takes anything i put it through. i would just like a little bit more milage

and i think it must have something to do with the 02's becasue my dad said he asked a ford guy about the milage thing and he said its prly an 02 sensor. so how much would brand new sensors cost me? and would it give me more power or no?

this pickup runs amazing i really dont wanna do anything to it that might screw it up just to get a lil better milage. but i think i should. i dont know what to do lol

I put a Remanufactured Engine in my 98 last summer...Recently I decided to check my gas mileage..I've checked it twice and it averaged about 14-14.5 each time. I drive nice and easy...Don't use the 4+4 very much...

If you go to Fueleconomy.gov and check..they say 15 overall...

Sorry - I missed this.

That's what it came with, they ride nice, they handle well in all weather, I don't carry heavy loads or tow anything heavier than a 5x8, and they last forever. I have 255-70/16 BFG Long Trails on it now, they have 50k on them, and are only about 1/2 worn. You also get better gas mileage with P-rated than C, D, or E-rated. My truck is not a work truck, it's a daily driver.

Two things.

4.2 Guy. I have a 03 ford 150 with a 4.2 auto, i am also young like you. 20 this thursday. I am avg 16-19 mpg. I drive hwy 2 work and a little in town drving. I like you wanted to put exhaust on. So i cut the stock muffler off and replaced it with a trush cherry bomb. It had a unqiue sound wicth i liked but i imdeitally saw a sharp decrease in mileage. 10-12mpg. I wonder what on earth is this all about. So i did a full tune at 76 the whole package. Same kinde of mileage. I was scratching my head, then someone at work told me to put my stock muffler back on.( glad i kept it). My wonderful fuel ecomony sudenully returned. I was overjoy. I would say put your stock exhaust back on if you want ur mgp's. Backpressure what a wonderful thing.

I get 13 city 16-18 highway with Flowmaster 40 si/do, Gott's intake mod/home made intake(helped about .5-1mpg) 3.08 gears and the 5 speed.

well im sure it would prly help... but my bro took the stock muffler off when he had it. lol so i have not the slightest clue ware it is lol... but my pickup sounds so sweet for a V6... everyone says man this thing has a V6 in it i say yeah... and most the time they either say why do you have such a small engine... or wow it sounds like a V8... im not gunna lie it does... i have 2.5 inch exhaust with a 2 in 2 out cherry bomb... cant remember the name of it tho... all i can say is i have never heard a V6 quite like mine. i will keep the sound and lose a few MPG i guess

ic ic... maybe i should buy some P rated next tire change. i have 255/70/16 there only 4 ply... i have put about 20,000 on them and they are about 50% gone... i hate them... all they are are nail magnets... i dont go down some of the roads i want to becasue im affraid of blowing a tire (i have did this before) so next time im gunna buy some good tires and spend the extra money to do it. the bad thing is... i spent 120 a tire on the 4 ply coopers i have now... all i can say is im dumb!

as for the guy asking about the wheel bearings, no special tools are needed. Jack up one wheel, take it off, pop off the dust cover, take off the cotter pin and master nut and put some grease in there. real easy to do. just make sure you dont destroy the dust cover, it bends easily.

yeah i really do not like ethanol here in Canada the fed mandated the same 10%.... most stations were putting 5 to 7 into the regular fuel anyway... Spending way more time hanging around my Mechanics than i need to... free coffee.. I have scene what ethanol and crap gas can do to an engine.
I have been running premium, branded fuel through mine since I got it 91 octane no ethanol Esso is the norm ... its exxon down south .
Recently I decide that i would do a test of fuels to see if it was worth the extra 40 cents a gallon i have to pay for 91. What I have found has been very interesting. I found that the 87 oct bilge wash form the discount fuel company down the road ( Pioneer usually about 10 cents a gallon cheep the esso) I got an atrocious 10.8 mpg on winter grade with mixed driving and not being an idiot
The last tank of esso on the other hand yielded a much more respectable 17 mpg mixed driving... (some of that was sideways through fields i may have forgot about the test) on what is still winter grade fuel. So it is defiantly work the extra for the good fuel on a 500 mile journey I SAVE $37.6.!!!!! I think its worth it

The best millage by far has been on a long drive to Northern Ontario I had driven (near as makes the difference) 475 miles on 17 gallons ..... 28MPG ( I'm not lying) that was with a bed cover and driving about 55-57 mph all the time, on summer fuel not to shabby.

you guys had better appreciate all the conversions i had to do to write this
