Kick back when switching gears

Whenever I'm in 3rd gear or higher. It seems like the engine has trouble getting into 4th or 5th sometimes. If I'm driving on the freeway at a constant speed and the RPMs sit at about 1600. The engine will kind of kick back at me and jerk the truck. So I usually let go of the gas pedal and just press it again a few seconds later to get it into the next gear and go faster. I thought this could be because of my spark plugs. But I switched all of them out with brand new ones and the truck is still jerking while on the freeway. I have a 2011 V6 eco boost. Any help or advice on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Did you use Motorcraft plugs? What did you gap the spark plugs to? Did you use dielectric grease in the coil boots? How many miles on the truck?

I used motor craft plugs and the truck has about 38,000 miles on it.

And the spark plugs came pre gapped and I heard greasing the plugs eventually dries out the boots

Did you CHECK the gap? It should be .028 and the plugs don't come out of the box with the correct gap. They have also been known to come out of the box cracked.

You NEED to apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the boots. That's what it's for!

glc is correct. Plugs need to be gapped BEFORE using them.

Dielectric grease is a non-conductive, silicone grease designed to seal out moisture and, therefore, prevent corrosion on electrical connectors. Being non-conductive, it does not enhance the flow of electrical current.

So I've switched out all the spark plugs and made sure the gap was .028 on all of them and I used dielectric grease. I drove the truck yesterday and still have the issue of the truck kicking when driving. I think it might be a transmission issue. Does anyone else have any ideas what could be causing the truck to kick?

There are a bunch of TSB's on transmission programming, get your dealer to research them.

It sounds like it's time for a trip to the dealer, Rob. If possible, take your tech on a test drive so you can demonstrate the kick back. Keep us in the loop moving forward; if you need help after receiving a diagnosis, I'll be here.
