'03 4.2 trouble codes and rough idle

Hi,

I have 03 f150 with the 4.2. I have already replaced upper and lower plenum gasket still getting the following codes only in cold weather. PO174, P0171. Now with the latest cold front (in Austin,TX 40 degrees) getting P1131, P1151. It also has a rough idle. Any help would be great.

Thanks,

Trey

You only mentioned gaskets. Did you not do the isolator bolts and sleeves as well?

I got all four of those codes when I did my IMG a few years back, but intake gaskets and those bolts got swapped out, too.

If you lined that notch in the gasket up with the intake itself just right and got those bolts and lower plenum gaskets, you should be set.

Is there any chance that even after replacing the gasket the problem could happen again?

I had mine replaced a couple of years ago (I gave him the instructions from the link above) and I'm assuming he replaced it all, but I don't remember now. A few weeks ago when it was cold it started having the same problem. Since it isn't my primary vehicle now I refuse to drive it in the cold, but I just wonder what keeps the new gasket from having the same problem.

Update

So I have taken care of the following, resealed the intake a second time, replaced mass air flow sensor, and PCV elbow. I am still getting a Bank 2 lean code with a bank 1 pending my fuel trim on banks 2 is 9 while ST fuel trim on 1 one is 3, is it possible that I have an o2 sensor issue or a leaking injector causing this. I need to mention that during the summer the check engine light can be cleared and will not come on as well. Looking for help on this as I now have to go see the county this week to pay a ticket for the damn thing.

Have you looked at the following for the lean codes (171 + 174)?

Dirty Air Filter or Use of a Cold-Air Intake <Hopefully you checked it when replacing the MAF
Proper Plugs and Gap
Plugged Gas Filter <Often overlooked
Test of fuel rail pressures
PCV Valve itself <Or cleaned it/inspected it while replacing the elbow
Any other vacuum hose cracks/disconnects

As for the P1xxx codes, I suggest looking at your 02 sensors.

If you have around 100k on them, I'd go ahead and replace them. They are consumable parts.

I replace mine on my vehicles every 80k to 100k. Just because of piece of mind and the fact that they are reasonably priced to change at those mileages.
