2012 F-150Lariat EB

Just bought a used 2012 F150 Lariat with 14k on it yesterday. I've noticed every time I hit the accelerator it has a small sound similar to a go-kart that gets louder as I increase speed. I didn't really notice it during the test drive b/c I had the radio turned up and was on the phone most of the time. Now, it's really starting to get on my nerves. I've never owned a cpvehicle that sounds like this. I've also never owned a Ford truck so I wasn't sure if this was a normal sound of the V6 EB or if I got a lemon. Has anyone else experienced this?

Are you hearing the turbo spooling? If so, you're the first I've seen complain about it. Most guys can't stay out of it.

That's when the sound is occurring but it just doesn't sound tough and rugged. It sounds like a Pontiac Grand Am 4 Cyl. My brother has an 09 F150 XLT v8 and his truck sounds much better and cleaner when he is accelerating.

You will not hear a sound like a V8. It's more of a fluttering whine. This is music to those that like the EB. I have been chided because one of the reasons I chose the 5.0 over the EB was the V8 sound.

Can you describe the sound a little better? The turbos have a faint wooshing sound when they spool up, mostly from just off idle to 2200RPM or so. After that the exhaust note , which is more of a burbling sound, overpowers them and they fade into the background.

The EB does sound different than any other truck on the road right now. If I have the windows up and the radio on or fan running I can not really hear the motor for the most part.

I've driven turbo cars for a long while, and yes they do whine or whistle when spooling. If it is loud to the point that you can hearit and is consistent then you may want to have the turbo checked. I've seen turbo bearings go bad or situations where oil does not get circulated well enough making the turbo louder. 14k miles it would be under full warranty.

Just wanted to keep a misperception from developing. The turbos are not oil cooled. The are water cooled.

Incorrect, the bearing are oil cooled/lubricated, the assembly is water cooled to stop coking from happening by shutting off a hot turbo. The water surrounds the bearing assembly housing and continues to cyphon even after the motor is shut off cooling the Turbo's down preventing early bearing coking/bearing failure from extreme heat and no oil flow to the bearings.

Yes the turbos are oil lubricated and only a fool would think the oil doesn't carry heat away, but the cooling system is the water.

They are oil lubricated and liquid cooled, not greased.

So my idea of checking the oil flow to the turbo still stands, thanks for clearing that up.

You are correct. After I posted that I went and checked and they are oil lubed.

If you loose oil flow ie coking, it will fail in minutes.

How do you plan on doing that? I wouldn't worry about it.
