what plugs did you put in?

the Essex 4.2L ONLY works well with Motorcraft SP-504s gapped .052"-.056"

Maybe your area just switched over to winter blend gas.

efans would get you back another 1 mpg and a CAI with casual driving maybe .5 mpg. A tuner would help. but your loss is probably winter blend gas

not really sure why everyone is talking about winter blend gas.

he did stated he changed his plugs, then started getting 13 mpg.

I think he used something other than Motocraft plugs...

I don't understand how a spark of electricity changes MPGs...

alex.....lol

If the plugs aren't burning the fuel as efficiently as the old plugs did, it takes more fuel to produce the same amount of energy as the old plugs.

less efficient burn = more fuel used

those must be some SUCKY plugs. Motorcrafts seem to last forever!

If you installed Bosch Plugs that would be the reason for the mileage loss. The winter blend gas they are referring to is most likely a higher ethanol percentage than gas ran in the summer time or a lower (86) octane gas.

I can find E10 (10% Ethanol added to gas) or 100% gas in my area. The 100% gas is Conoco and Phillips/Conoco and it averages about $.04 less per gallon than Shell.

I recommend Motorcraft plugs gapped to factory spec, a new air filter, a new fuel filter and set tire pressure at 2 psi higher than factory spec when cold.

Could be, I don't really monitor it enough to notice a difference I guess. The car (Grand Marquis) w/ 4.6L gets between 19 - 20 mpg. - That's according to it's computer. The trucks been at 16 mpg, since winter 2008 (last tune up). I haven't checked it in awhile tho, - and since it's been on blocks lol.

They should sticker the pumps somewhere, and say " winter brew " , if that's what it is,- uknow..

I put in NKG platinum plugs. I also went from driving with a heavy foot to driving Conservatively and got almost the same mileage as before. any help is much appreciated as I am a student and with gas going at $3 a gal. I dont think it is winder blend being that I live in south florida
