I would say go for the V8 as well. V6 is kinda sluggish.
But I do get fairly good mileage now that the breakin
process is done with my 03 scab V6
local driving: 17 mpg
highway driving: 20
But I am not your regular leadfooted driver.
Accelerating with V6 really hard will drop mpg to 13-15
I also live in very flat land in central jersey so i think i get
fairly good mileage with the V6.

I have a 97 4.2. I regularly get 16 to 17 in town and 22 to 23 on the highway. A few months ago I had the truck in the shop and was able to borrow a friend's 2000 F150 to pull my mowing trailer. He has the 4.6 and to tell the truth, I couldn't tell a difference pulling. However, the 4 wheel disc breaks made a TREMENDOUS difference stopping the beast. I definately will have 4 wheel discs on the next truck. I should say that empty his truck pulls from the line somewhat stronger than mine.

Id say get the 6 but only after 2000 or so.. and if u dont and u want an 8.. well get the 5.4 then because the 4.6 doesnt have that much more hp than the 4.2s and i dont really feel like the 4.6 feels that much diff than the 4.2 for the difference in cost... I get about 16 city and 18 or more highway and i drive 75-80 on highway cuz in houston tx u can go 80 an dpeople are still passing you.. i hate it.. if u drive 65 u get run over.... if i drive the speedlimit i get really really good gas mileage..

I was getting right at 20mpg before I put on the 285/50/20 boss rims and goodyear tires on it. Now it is just over 16mpg. I heard something about summer and winter grade fuels having a effect on it. I just figured it was the wheel/tire set up. My mac intake should be here friday so I will see if that makes a difference. I am here in Georgia, I dont know if we have oxygenated fuels here in the summer and regular fuel in the winter or not but it always acts better when it is below 70 degrees out than it does when it is above that.

I just bought my first F150 ( 2000, 5 Speed, 4.2 with 17 inch
wheels ) and I could declare I can see the fuel hand move. I
had a 1964 with a 302 750 dbl. pumper and wasn't much worse
than this newer one...and it shifted better. Maybe I'll put a 3 speed in this 2000 with an Indy 3 shifter. What problems
would I run into there ? Oh, better save that for the tranny
page .
