Cheap Air Intake System for V6???

I just bought a complete new air intake system (looks like an Airaid or K&N with a chrome tube) for $49 on ebay....

It is some off-brand but has all the parts and a filter. Anyway, is was designed for the 4.6 V-8, but my neighbor bought one of these last month and found that by cutting the air intake tube with a hacksaw, it can be made to fit the V6 (there is not cheap V6 that we found available).

Anyway, his is awsome, and he only paid $39 + shipping. It looks like the brand nae units for over $200 and works perectly.

I'll post some pics when I get mine on....

I adapted my original airbox to a K&N filter and only had to buy the filter. I didn't even have to do any cutting on my airbox.

Bartruth,
I have a 98 XL, how do you modify your airbox for the K&N?
I was going to buy the whole intake, but if I don't have to....

I would think the 4.2 using the motorcraft filter 1632 which is the same the 4.6 and 5.4 uses that a K&N designed for the 4.6 would fit in the stock airbox.

it fit in my 97's airbox but i still hacked off the cone part of the airbox cheapest way i can see making a cold air intake

I built a plastic ring that holds my K&N on the filter clamp so the K&N is completely open and took the stock air box completey out. Works very well and was very inexpensive. I made the ring out of a plastic plate.

I bought the intake for a 4.6 off ebay and did some modifying and it works perfect. i tried i 4.6 MAF and that was a bad idea on a 4.2 engine. it is WAY too rich.

Can anyone post a tutorial on modifing a v8 intake to fit a v6? Because right now I just hacked my box apart and would like to get rid of the stock tube and all the "wrinkles" in it.

i cut my air box simular to some of the others....check out my gallery.....it helps a little....but the best part about it is that it has not caused any problems with the computer.....and looks good too.

I just built a plastic retainer ring to hold the filter on I used an old plastic plate and cut a nice ring out of it the the filter would fit through but the rubber ring on the engine side would not - I used the existing retainer clip from the air box to hold the ring (plate and filter on. Then I removed the half of the air box going into the side wall in the engine compartment. Did I pickup any HP - I can't say maybe a little but you can sure here the rush of air into when you get on it.
