Question Checking/Fixing Starter

I have a 98 4.2L. Is it possible to check the starter yourself and where exactly is it?
I posted a message here earlier called "Terrible Noise When Starting Up" which explains my problem. I'll try to make a link to it. It's on the third page of the engines forum as of today.

my truck makes the same noise you are talking about. My dealer told it was the starter and the only way to fix it is to replace the starter. Mine is out of warranty so I am goiung to wait until the starter really goes bad. I pulled the starter off and checked the fly wheel...you can tell it does rub but not enough to mknock any teeth off.

Thanks, ffdemoss, Do you know how much a new starter costs?
