Unhappy Shift problem

It does not happen everytime I drive it, but about half the time I drive it seems like the truck will not shift into the higher gears. I will be doing about 3500 RPM's at 55 m.p.h. Usually I think I am only running about 2000 RPM's at the speed. No matter how far I push on the throttle it just won't shift. Any ideas on the problem, I have 84000 miles on my 1997. I just bought it two weeks ago. If I had seen this message board first I would have not bought it for sure. I guess hindsight's 20/20. By the way I heard my first knock on the engine today and the oil pressure is bottoming out when I stop at lights. Taking it into the dealer on Monday. It just makes me sick that I just paid all that money for what appears to be a lemon year for the ford F150.
