deciding on V6 or V8? this might help...

here is a link to a video of a 04 f150 heritage going 0-100mph with a K&N intake. 4.2L V6 5spd 2wd reg cab longbed. this is not the quickest it goes but it will help you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5vGBlO5DOI

also here is a 0-60mph with the same intake in 9.58 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK8617kjGs8

4.2L V6 202hp
4.6L V8 248hp
5.4L V8 300hp

if you are going for a 5.4L then get it but the 4.2 isnt a slouch compared to the 4.6L but i will admit the 4.6L sounds better but still the intake on the 4.2L makes it sound kinda nice plus you get better gas mileage with the V6

first of all congrats. 2nd what do you mean by "flame me"? if its about the V8 Vs V6 thing, some poeple dont need the V8 but think the V6 has no power at all which yeah it has less but it still works fine. my 04 with 3.08 gears might not have been able to pull a lot but my 08 is geared lower and has towing package so it could pull more. it really doesnt matter what you have as an engine as long as its geared right and isnt straining, it will work.

and i've driven a 06 f150 ext cab 4x4 with a 4.6 and my 04 would have blown it away easy. my 08 i donno because of gearing.

I personally prefer the V8. I work my truck often, I daily drive it but I still get 16.2mpg with it which is right up there with you V6 guys. I also prefer the rumble of the V8, and the better torque for pulling. I dont top my truck out, or feel at all ****y because I have the 5.4L. Have it by preference and what I would need for it to do.

yeah the 5.4 is way better than the V6 but the 4.6 is not much better except the sound. 16.2mpg is probably a little less than what i got in the city with mine with an intake on it. i was getting 22.5-23 average(not highway). stock i was getting 18.9 average, then with a K&N drop in filter i got 19.9 average. but intake makes it sound kinda like a V8 and it really livens the V6 up a bit.

but thats cool, you got a truck made for what you need it for. you coulda had a V6 but youd probably be straining it a lot

There really isn't that much difference between the V6 and the 4.6. I prefer the V6 because it's old tech and simple. Pushrods, standard coil packs, plug wires, and easy to change plugs. Gas mileage is not a reason to get a V6, it's not that great.

A real reason to get a V6 right now is - leftover 08 V6 XL's are DIRT cheap, and they statistically are the most reliable truck made. I've seen them out there brand new as low as $9998. That's a 5 speed manual work truck with no A/C. Add automatic and A/C and you should still be able to find one for about 12 grand.

The 09's have dropped both the V6 and the manual trans. The base package is now a 4.6 and auto.

Really? So there is no more V6 and manual trans option at all?

Not for 2009. The 4.2 is discontinued, and so is the Mazda 5 speed. Base engine is a 2 valve 4.6, base transmission is a 4 speed auto. Options are a 3 valve 4.6 and a 3 valve 5.4. Transmission option is a 6 speed auto. If you want a stick in a Ford truck for 2009, you have to get a Super Duty with a ZF.

I regret not going with a V8. They should never put a V6 in a full size truck.

You should have never lifted and put huge tires on a V6 truck, but that doesn't change the way your truck looks.

Tim that shifting sucks. If you run your gears out further the next gear with appreciate it.

yeah it sucks because i was holding a camera too. when i dont have it i shift a lot quicker. and my truck's rev limiter was 5400RPMs which i got up to about 52 on the 1st couple gears then maybe 4900 into 4th. but if you go to high in rpms, you actually lose power and speed from if you shifted earlier. ive tried other ways but the vid with the 9.58 seconds is the quickest i ever got and that seemed to be the best shift points i could find.
it doesnt matter anyway, i dont have the truck anymore.

I have a 99 V6 and like it... i get 15 mpg which isnt bad considering the facts.

1> Lifted
2> 36" tires
3> No performance mods
4> Stock gears
5> Drive pretty much like an idiot

> now whats the problem with lifting and putting big tires on a v6> i lifted a 4 banger and put big tires on it
> Most jeeps that are lifted a 4.0's
> My 4.2 once geared correctly will be a very capable offroad rig.

I know. I never planned on going this nuts with my truck. One thing led to another and here I am.
