Misfires!

When I start my engine at first there is an unpleasant vibration, but after it heats up it runs perfectly well. I brought my F150 to Ford and after they dianosed it they replaced all spark plugs. The problem still remains and then they said its the coil aboce the sparkplug.. I am beginning to to feel that the so called computer diagnostic test is not that effective as they are also doing "trial and error". I'm afraid that after they put the coil, they will say it's the hi-tension wire.. Hope you can give me advice on the matter..

Thanks and regards to everyone!

Replace all the spark plug wires and the coil pack.

It has been a while since I have been on the board, but F150Forever is back, baby!
I had a misfire problem at around 122,000 mi. last week. It had been about 50,000 mi. since I did the last tune-up so I changed the plugs and wires. The misfire got worse!!!!
I read some posts on this board and many pointed to the coil pack. Well, I changed it a couple of hours ago and that was it! I bought a Borg Warner at Advance Auto Parts for $76 + tax (NC). Mine has three bolts that hold it in and it took me around twenty minutes and 2 beers to finish the job - not bad!

That's exactly why I like the 4.2l... nothing fancy.

Hi TJ03. Engine runs perfectly well after engine heats up. Sorry to take long to answer. Was so depressed because even the dealers here doesn't seem to have an idea. I replaced all the plugs and coil, but not the hi-tension wire. It the plugs are popping out, is there a way I can check them?- Thanks and God bless

i think mine kinda does the same.... i can see my engine shake a little bit too... the crazy thing is it goes away when i turn on my a/c

my truck has a crap load of mods though and i think my issue is in tuning.

i really dont have any advice for you since you've already replaced ur plugs and coil pack. i guess next thing would be ur wires. just be sure to do it all urself its easy and wont be very expensive.

does it affect ur gas mileage or the performance of ur vehicle?

It doesn't affect my gas mileage 8km/ltr on a highway and 5-6 km/ltr city driving. Does your "engine service soon" lights up? Mine did, but when I disconnect the battery and push the hi-tension wire, everything runs smoothly again. The problem is after a more or less 40-50km ride it goes back again. I seldom use the truck, I'm afraid it might breakdown. Were you able to solve your problem? - Thanks

If the CEL is coming on, do NOT disconnect the battery - go get the codes read!

If you have changed the plugs and the coil pack, but not the spark plug wires, replace the spark plug wires.

I had it checked with the dealer already, I just find it hard to trust them since at first they were so sure the plugs should be replaced, then the coil, seems to me they are doing trial and error at my expense. I don't know, maybe that's just how it really works here..But I will replace my wires. The problem is I don't have the manual with me. I hope things go well after I replaced my wires. Thanks

Hi GLC, hey I just noticed everytime I fill my tank at this particular gas station, the problem occurs. I am using shell unleaded here, I tried e10 but it damaged my sensors. do you think it can be a factor? Like maybe their storage is not clean or something? Everything is okay again, and I'm using the truck again. But I already ordered my wire. Unfortunately, it takes 3-4 days to 3-4 weeks for the parts to arrive. I really love American cars they are way ahead when it comes to smooth ride and quality interiors from Japanese cars, I just got scared of the "plugs popping out thing" because Im sure the repair is going to be very expensive.

The V-6 does not have the plug ejection issue.

E10 should not damage anything, but if you have problems with fuel at a specific station, don't use it!

Barry,

I know that in a lot of "Third World Countries", the techs are not always properly trained. This may be the case in Manila. Don't forget, you are in a country where they use their imagination when it comes to auto repair. Look at all those "Jeepneys" pieced together with borrowed and fabricated parts. Good; if you don't have access to the proper parts and you want to keep your car on the road.

Here is what you do. Go online and order a code reader. Then read the codes yourself. It is very easy to search the codes online. Think along the lines of a SCT X-Cal3 with custom tuning if you want a performance enhancement. Or just go ahead and mount a Scan Gauge II into your truck so that you can have real time feedback on what your truck is doing.
