I am planning on getting a tranny cooler for my 02 SCrew since I don't have the tow package. Where would a good place to get one be? Ford or aftermarket?
There are several types of aftermarket coolers. If you do not have one, you definately need to get one, especially where you live.
B&M, DERALE, Perma-Cool, all make good coolers. You might want to try Mike Troyer on the Computer Chip Forum. He sells and recommends the DERALE with the fan. I think I'm going to add that before this summer as an additional on top of my factory auxilliary cooler. You can reach him at (540) 862-9515. He is extrmely knowledgeable and will help you make the right choice for your vehicle.
They're easy to do yourself. You may want to also add an external filter such as the magnefine or perma-cool.

HI!... I installed a 14" X 10" aluminum PERMA-COOL tranny cooler about 3 years ago. It works great. It dropped my tranny temps about 35 degree's over the stock external tranny cooler (JUNK). I removed the stock cooler and replaced it with the PERMA-COOL unit. I also installed a PERMA-COOL external tranny filter also at the same time. I then mounted a 10" SUMMIT RACING electric fan to the tranny cooler to help things out while in the pitts at the dragstrip. With the truck off and the tranny temp at 190 degree's. It only takes the fan about 10 minutes to drop it to sub 140 degree temps. Here's a few pics.
In talking with Mike, he suggested using the DERALE W/fan in addition to the Factory External Cooler. Are you saying to just use it in place of the Factory Auxilliary Cooler?
HI!... JBRIII : I removed the factory tranny cooler because I personally don't like the "STACKED PLATE" design. Plus the factory installed my stock tranny cooler directly behind my front bumper where "NO" air passed through it. My PERMA-COOL tranny cooler is mounted in front of my rad on the driver's side right in the air flow. I already have the primary tranny cooler that is built into the rad it'self plus my 14X10 PERMA-COOL cooler. I see no reason to run three coolers. I've got a VERY modified tranny, plus a 2400 stall converter and am usually very hard on my trannies. With my current set-up I never over heat.
I've always used the stacked plate design. Why do you prefer the other. I've always wondered if the stacked plate design may be more prone to clogging?
DuggyDug- I wouldn't take off the factory cooler (you should have a small one even if you don't have factory tow). If you remove the factory cooler, Ford can deny the transmission warranty because you removed their cooler. Their logic is that they have no control over which aftermarket cooler you add and it may have less capacity than their OEM cooler. I would add an additional cooler in series with the factory cooler.
I have the factory cooler (tow package) and an additional B&M cooler and a temp gauge. If you are towing a heavy load, the temp gauge will tell you exactly what is happening. Adding the second cooler dropped my tranny temps about 30* over the factory cooler alone when towing my 7k trailer.
