Cool Did you get the right auxiliary transmission cooler?

2000 & 2001 with Class III towing should have-

4.2L and 4.6L / 14 plate
5.4L with 4R70W / 22 plate
5.4L with 4R100 / 14 plate

The stack of plates can be counted on the cooler in front of radiator/passenger's side of truck.

Question

Max, I counted 14 rows on my cooler. I remember reading somewhere here that each row actually is a dual core. The way to count them was to not count the top and bottom row, then multiply the total number of rows by 2 and that will give you the number. Was I mislead???? Thanks for you input...

Question

woodswalker1- After reading several posts on this, I was concerned. I have the Class III and mine has 13 plates total/including top and bottom (not 14). Your method would put me at 22. I was hoping someone had part numbers, measurements, and dealer experiences like the radiators. I was hoping to get information, let some time go by since the radiator issue, and then persue this if necessary. Are you sure that yours has 14 total/including top and bottom; how would this equal 22 then; or are we talking 6 excluding top and bottom? Thanks for your response, I was beginning to wonder if anyone else cared or had information.

Exclamation

Max, I just looked at mine again and it has a total of 13 plates. It measures approx 13" wide x 11" high and approx 1.75" thick. Or about the size roughly of a large cigar box. I wish somebody would let us know if it is the right one. maybe I could take a look at somebodys F-250 Powerstroke at work and see what theirs has in it????? That should be a 4R100 auto trans if it is in the diesel. If they are the same size then I guess I've been screwed again by Ford??? Only the 4R70W gets the larger 22 plate trans cooler????

Cool

5.4/4R70W standard equiptment = 14
5.4/4R70W w/ Class III = 22
From 2000 &2001 sourcebook
Well, 13 certainly isn't 14 and your initial method equals 22??? Where did you get this information? Maybe we'll get a few more responses. If we don't, I'll hit the parts department and the lot for information.

Smile

Read it here about a month or two ago. Sounds like it could be reasonable???? I'm gonna check into it as well. BTW, did your truck come with a hood liner? Mine did not....

Cool

Ok, thanks, we'll try to get some more info. The fact that it counts out at 13 makes sense based on the counting method that you mentioned. NO, I have no hood liner .

I just wanted to pass along an update. I looked at about 30 5.4 F-150s at the lot with and without Class III towing. About 1/3 of the 5.4 Class III equipped trucks did not have the larger cooler. If anyone is interested, you can look at the cooler and tell very easily. The standard cooler looks like it has 9 segments including the top and bottom plates, the larger cooler looks like it has 13 segments including top and bottom plates.

Thumbs up

I guess I was lucky..I just looked at mine and FORD installed the correct, larger tranny cooler with my Class III package. Thanks for the info!

Dustoff-

You're Welcome, I got lucky too. I was picturing myself hassling the same radiator guy at my dealership. Looking under all those trucks was very definative that there is a problem.
