Post Transmission is Crap

After doing a intake cleaning and putting on a new air filter(K&N took a dump). I took the truck out to blow out any carbon and such.

Well I get out on the street and put it to the floor, I slam 2nd and the darn thing grinds like a flour mill. It finally went--after the gear shift nob came off

Anyhow, its hard to believe that ford woud match a great engine to a crap tranny. I have already had the syncro's replaced about 5,000 miles ago. I guess these are shot too.

Any suggestions?

No disrespect intended but . . if you want to slam gears, why did you buy a truck? This is a truck transmission after all and I suspect that synchros going down that fast are a function of slammin'. My 5 Spd only has 7M on it but I'll be surprised if the synchros go out . . ever. Or maybe I'll be eating crow down the line for this point of view!

Well,

I ususally drive like I'm 90 years old shift very slowly and deliberatly. I make sure I push the clutch in all the way and I don't hold the clutch in at red lites.

The reason I romped on it a bit was that I had just used some intake cleaner and was "blowing out the carbon".

Even when driving my 90 year old style, 2nd gear is really bad and 3rd is a close second as far as ease of shifting.

When pulling away from a stop light, old ladies usually accelerate faster than I do.

This is the worse transmission I have ever had. 92 ford ranger went 100,000 miles and no problems what so ever. 00 VW Jetta, slickest thing since sliced bread.
99BMW r1100r (clunky to say the least) but it still finds the gear okay!!

Cool

You could match the revs so the synchros do less work. I think double-clutching also helps the synchos. Both of these worked on my Ranger with a worn second gear synchro. I also had the shift knob come off in that truck when slamming second Pounded it back on with my hand, that hurt..

I have lots of people pass me when I leave the line at a stop light. Its a manual truck tranny, not an automatic in a light weight car. If you want to beat every one off the line, then the factory tranny is not going to do it for you.
If gears are grinding then your rpms are not at the correct value to easily slam the gears.
Just my opinion.

All i can say is when my syncrhos were replaced, about 13000kms ago, the dealer said, 'you'll be back'.

They haven't grinded yet, but i'm always researching to find a new tranny for when the time comes. I would like this truck to last me 10+ years.

It's the synchros dude, I don't slam my gears at all, and it was at a point where i would have to rest it on 2nd to get it slip in, or it would grind.

It's not the clutch, becuase the clutch has not been tampered or adjusted, and to this day it works fine. the synchros were replaced, and it now shifts like butter.

Has anybody here ever thought about swapping their 5spd for a Mustang T-5 or Tremec tranny? Could this be done fairly easily? Since the 4.6 is "modular" there shouldn't be to many difference from the Mustang 4.6 and ours right? Wasn't "eph1fifty" going to try that out?

Wow, not what I want to hear about the 5 speeds!! I baby my truck and shift in the "snik-snik" slow style. I'll have to admit that once in a while the shift into 3rd isn't as smooth as it should be. I heard once that Ford engineers intentionally made 3rd gear a little notchy to slow people down on the slammin'. Ford could have done a better job on the tranny for shift quality. Total synchro failure should be a very rare thing.
