Unhappy 1st-2nd clunking: Normal, Clutch or Syncros??

Okay, I bought a 2000 F150 S/C 4.2 5-Speed last week. It had about 27,800 miles when I drove it off the lot at Jordan Ford in San Antonio. I didn't notice it on the test drive at all, but it kinda clunks when I shift from 1st to 2nd. I can feel the clunk in the seat of my pants when it happens. It's more pronounced when I've been driving for a while. Also, occasionally, it will give a small squeal when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. This is also more prounced after driving for a while I've read about people's problems with the syncros in these M5OD transmissions, so I am wondering if I might be having these problems as well, or if maybe the clutch was abused before I got it and it is going out, or not fully disengaging.

The truck was definitely USED before I got it, the bed is all scratched up to hell. (the rest of the body is in decent shape though). Anyways, if anyone has any comments, I'd love to hear them. I've been looking for like the last year, I had a Nissan regular cab before and it was way too small for me. (I'm 6'7"). Out of the domestic base model extended cabs, I liked the Ford V6 the best. The Chevy V6 is weak, and the Dodge 318 V8 (standard on Dodge Club Cab) is enormously fuel-thirsty. But now that I finally got my baby, to run into these sorts of problems is disconcerting.

Don't currently own an F150. Dammit! I am 6'7" and I have a stupid little regular cab Nissan that I barely fit in. Hoping to get an '01 F150 XL SC Sport 4.2 5 Speed soon.

Hey there Brons2, I too bought my F-150 used not to long ago. I too had the 1st to 2nd clunk occasionaly and my 1st gear synchro was going. So I though before I lower my truck I should get it checked out under warranty so I don't get hassled later on. Long story short they agreed on my tranny probs and said instead of bothering to fix it they will give me a new tranny! Good news since I don't know how the previous owner drove it. My trucks been at Ford for the past 2.5 weeks because the tranny on a "special build only" basis, but I should be getting it back this week. So I say have it checked out, your still under the warranty!

BTW I hear you on the height thing. I'm 6'5" and drove a reg cab Ranger for 3 years before my F-150

My 4.6L 5 speed has done this since about 5,000 mi., and my 98 Ranger did the same, as well as my 99' F-150. They've all done it, so I have gotten use to it. Problem is, it now grinds into 2nd. and 3rd. about once a day. Won't new sychros go bad just as fast? Could I have worse problems?
