Ok, here is the deal.
I looked down to see weather or not I was in O/D while I was pulling a trailer, and there she was just a flashing. However the tc will lock in into O/D and drive fine, but it wont stop flashing, and when I decelerate at about 15-20mph, I get that tranny clang that DODGE is known for. (NOT HAPPY)
So if anybody knows why this is happening, please drop me a line, not sure if it is a sensor of what!!??

Do a search for o/d light flashing, light flashing, o/d light, etc. Mine flashes every once in a while also. Having it scanned for codes tomorrow. I don't haul anything and I haven't noticed any problems. My speedo starts going crazy after the light is flashing for about 15 minutes. I have a topic in computer chips called "tranny problems caused by superchip?"

A flashing OD light means SOMETHING is wrong with the transmission system.
The transmission system includes the transmission, torque converter, wiring, sensors, etc. To be able to tell you what is causing the light to flash you must have the code that is set. Something is not as it should be.
I had the same problem with my truck around 19000 miles, that damed light started flashing and would not go away, although mine would not go into 4th gear and started shifting strange. At that point I had not towed or hauled anything really. Took it in to the dealer and found it is a known problem on later F-Series trucks mine was a valve in the trans was not working properly. Also I have heard other people have problems with the trans failing if it is serviced at Fords regular schedule has anyone else heard or able to confirm this?

I have heard that changing you tranny fluid will kill your tranny too, but then what the heck are you supposed to do, time for a 5 speed, LOL.
As Mark has stated previously. If your OD cancel light starts flashing you need to have your codes read. Depending upon which code is present, it will help the Technician to diagnose what is happening with the powertrain.
Depending on the severity of the condition, you may experience strange shifting of your trans. These transmissions have a failsafe mode that attempt to protect the transmission to allow the vehicle to be driven to a repair facility, hopefully before they cannibalize themselves.
The best thing you can do for your trans is to change the fluid on a regular basis. Have the pan dropped, a new Ford filter installed and drain the converter.

I heard that "Flushing" your transmission can cause problems. They will just pump new fluid into your tranny through the cooler lines....They usually don't drop the pan and change the filter. When they flush the tranny it just mixes up all of the tiny metal shavings back into the transmission. I talked to a Ford Service Manager and he said he's seen tranny's fail shortly after a "Flush" and he always drops the pan and drains the TC.

This has been going on for a week now .

I got the truck with 39k on it,I have changed the fluid once at 45k, and once at 75k and dropped the pan and drained the fluid both times, along with cleaning off the magnet too. I think that I've kept fairly good care of it. Also changed the oil every 45 days, or 3000 miles, still Motorcraft 5w-30.
Also here is a piece of mind, service manager and friend of mine said that the 5.4's with piston slap should stick with a 5w-30 oil to prevent knocking.
I had the same exact problem on my Co. truck (1997 F-150 S/C, 4.6L). First time problem occured was @ approx. 124,000 miles. Took to trans. shop @ codes indicated failure of up-flow or down-flow sensors (exhaust). Sensors were contaminated with oil; however, technician could not tell which sensors were defective. That dropped trans. pan & everything was clean. They replaced (4) sensors (up & down-flow) & cured problem. Cost was $427.00. This problem was a result of poorly replaced pan gasket by Ford dealer, when trans. was serviced @ approx. 43,000 miles.
At approx. 155,000 miles the same thing happened. I took truck to independant firm that had former Ford Tech. that diagnosed problem immediately. Problem was trans. oil contamination in one of the exhaust sensor "plug packs". Cost was approx. $115.00. Both times computer codes had to be reset.

I just got home from visiting my friendly FoMoCo dealer's service dept. My complaint was an occasionally flashing OD OFF light (Red '97 F-150 3-door stretch cab 4X4 Off Road with 83,000 miles, babied, not plowed, not towed). Code was still in computer and problem is an intermittant VSS (Variable Speed Sensor)-$10 part, two hours labor to replace).
It's amazing to me that everything started going down the tubes right after hitting 75,000 miles with a 75,000 mile extended warranty--Next time I'll get the 100,000 mile warranty--they haven't ever made a Ford that'll make it to 100,000 without everyting breaking!
I had a '94 Ram 3/4 ton 4X4 before buying the Ford new in '97. The Dodge was a real lemon (I think they all are!!!), but the Ford is catching up with it!!!!! Now that I'm off warranty the doors cracked, but while on warranty (at 72,000 miles), my tranny started acting up and Ford rebuilt it and it cost me nada.
My earlier tranny problem was that it wouldn't stay in OD on a slight highway incline; it kept trying to downshift, but would upshift after a few seconds and kept repeating the cycle every five to ten seconds or so while on the incline. On a steep hill it would downshift and hold okay. They said it was a wrong-sized piston in the torque converter and they put in a new torque converter and rebuilt the rest of the tranny and did it under warranty. Problem went away (for a change).
I guess if I keep it (I want to, it's a great truck), It'll just be one stupid thing after another from now on.

And there you have it. You know what really kills your truck? ..... having someone else work on it. In many ways I think that those hole-in-the-wall mechanic shops do a better job than the Ford service departments because they NEED you to come back and they NEED you to refer others to them.
My experience with service departments at dealerships is that they couldn't give a sh## about your vehicle.
I'd NEVER allow anyone to change my oil, change my ATF or anything else that I can do myself. So far I've only had my truck in for a new seatbelt retractor, passenger mirror, and rear pinion seal. I'm dreading getting a larger radiator installed ... all that Amsoil ATF spilling on the ground. The idiots would probably top off the ATF with Dexron III or similar if they even thought about adding fluid. They're too busy thinking about where they're going to eat lunch.
I read somewhere where one member was able to take the new radiator home and install it himself. Sounds good to me ....
