Question Anyone replaced the shift knob?

Found one I kinda like: http://www.mrgasket.com/hurstnew.htm#Classic (Billet Al.) ...here locally for $30, but it's only 1 3/4" round, where stock is 2", also it seems to be taller, and I don't want it to stand too far off the shaft, where the use of the adapters would, I believe, require that. My thinking is, dremmel out the threads in the knob, and slide it all the way down onto the fat part of the shaft and use the hex screws to secure it, however, I'm afraid to take my stock one off as just go for it. Has anyone else tried this or would care to? Thanks!!!

I found an aluminum knob at NAPA for $20 and cut down the stick about 6 inches. Now the top of the stick hits at the top of the power port door.

Jackal. Using an adjustable wrench, place it under the knob and tap upward. The shaft is splined and the knob will come right off. Now you have a couple of options here. First you could thread the shaft, tap the ball and install it or what I did was drill the ball just under 5/8 inch, applied locktight and tapped it on. Has been that way for over a year.

The knob I used had a brass insert which I removed and then I drilled the plastic. I believe the shaft would accept a 5/8" die nut which may be the better option. at the time I did mine I didn't have a die nut in that size so I fiqured I try to install it and if it came loose I would tap the ball and thread the shaft. Of course now that I have the die nut I haven't had a problem.

Question

I guess what I need to know is, how long, approx., is the thin part of the shaft, which fits into the stock knob? Thanks again!!!

Anyone seen that one that is in the Bullitt? It's the same as the 35th anniversary Mustang, sweet shifter, but i'm pretty sure the whole is the wrong size.

The stock knob is easy enough to remove, it's mainly a matter of finding a suitable replacement knob. I know i'm still looking, I'd like to chrome ones, for the 5sp and Tcase shifter.

Question

The fat part of the shaft, below the stock knob, is approx. 5/8" and the Hurst knob accepts up to 9/16", which is just under 5/8". Are you saying that the Hurst knob is long enough that it will secure itself to the fat part of the shaft, eliminating the need for the plastic adapter piece? Thanks man!!!
