Shudder in the transmission

I have a '98 150 Ford 4X4 Off Road with a 4.6 and automatic trans. I currently have 90,000 miles on this vehicle. I tow a livestock trailer about 30% of the time. Problem: I recently noticed that the truck will shudder (like the truck is running over rumble strips in the road) for only a second or so whenever the transmission shifts into high gear. This happens from 35 - 55 MPH. This will happen whether OD is on or off and is more noticeable when I tow.
Any thoughts?

Fluid Change

I think if you search this forum you'll find that in most cases the fluid is worn out and needs to be changed. How long has it been since you've done yours? 30K should be the max.

John,
I had the fluid changed almost a year ago...approximately 20K miles.

Growl,

Sorry, that was the obvious question. I'm really not sure. If you hang on, someone will post another idea I'm sure.

sounds like the infamous torque converter shudder...the cheapest way to fix this is prolly to have the tranny fluid changed again and make sure they put mercon V in it...

mercon V was specified to help with torque converter shudder on the 4r70w which is the tranny you have...

Easy to fix...LUBEGUARD

I had the same problem that drove me nuts. Had the trans and TC flushed and fluid changed and that held out for a couple months...then the shudder came back. I talked to a guy who restored older cars, and he told me to just put in an additive. I tried "LubeGuard" (I'm pretty sure that's the name)...and it worked And the best thing is...it's still working. I have no more tranny shudder at all. There are a few different additives, this one came in a red bottle (hopefully they don't all come in red bottles). It says on the bottle that it helps stop transmission shudder...they're right.

Try it...cheap fix for under $10

Scott

Had the same problem! Some of these replies might work. I did try them but with the luck I have none work. I dropped my trans pan and took a look. Needless to say, when I ran my finger on the bottom, It came out looking like pudding! 1500 to rebuild, 2200 for a new one. But Jeg's set me up with a TCI Heavy-Duty for $867 Shipped! (less bellhousing). Hope these replies work for you! My luck just hasen't been good lately! Thanks to all that help me out!
