Post High pitch grinding sound

Sorry if this has been asked before but... I bought 97 4x4 s/c 4.6 F150. The truck is in great shape, low miles, but while driving I notice a high pitch grinding sound. If you move the 4x4 floor shifter to the left slightly the sound goes away. Is this a common problem, and should it be fixed? A mechanic took the truck for a spin and said it is nothing to worry about. I'm worried because I'm already trying to deal with the door crack and rust problem. Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. It is an automatic transmission.
