Will Shift Kit Make Truck Faster??

I know it's not a race car or anything and I don't plan on taking it to the strip, but if I did, would a shift kit make it faster in the quarter mile? Or just make it shift harder and feel like your going faster? I want to get one, but I have the 4R70w and i'm worried that it will destroy my transmission and void my warranty. I would like to have it beefed up at the same time as the shift kit, but don't know what to put in it to make it stronger. I have a 02' F150 Extended Cab 2wd with 5.4L. Any opinions? Thanks.

HI!.... Yes a shift kit will help in reducing your 1/4 mile times. It does this by cutting down on the time it takes the tranny to change gears (shift). In other words the time being wasted on the tranny slipping into the next gear to give you that soft shift can now be put to use in pushing the vehicle forward. A shift kit (TRANSGO) set on a high setting with a good tranny is usually good for about 1 to 2 tenths at most. I know when I'm street racing that when my tranny shifts I gain a ton of ground on the guy I'm racing. As for building up a race/duty 4R70-W, that would be a good idea. It's expensive but worth it. When I had mine done I had TEFLON rings, ALTO clutch packs/bands, SONNAX valves and a ton of other things I forget right now done to it. I'm also running a custom built 2400 stall converter and REDLINE D4 synthetic tranny fluid, external tranny filter, and PERMA-COOL aluminum 10" X 14" aftermarket tranny cooler.

I agree with Neal but I think you gain much more then just the time the trans takes to shift. The torque of the engine is transferred almost directly to the rear wheels and will literally throw you back in your seat when the truck shifts at WOT.
I have mine set between the 1 and 2 setting and am running it with a superchip. I've seen Neal’s video and his shifts “NICE". Mine will chirp the rear wheels most of the time.

What do you mean you have it set between the 1 and 2 setting? Are you talking about the shift kit or the superchip? How do you set it between 1 and 2 and is 1 for harder shifts or softer? Sorry for all the questions, new to automaitc transmissions. Thanks for your reply's though.

Why not just go with a factory valve body? Cost abut $40 and can be done in the drive-way in about an hour.

They actually give you drill sized for stage 1 - 2 - 3, the larger the hole, the harder the shift. The 1 is the mildest and the 3 is the hardest shifting. Mike the superchip distributer recommended stage 1 and thought stage 2 would be too hard with the superchip. I went with a setting between 1 and 2 (used my own drill bit) because I was worried that with the Super Chip, the shifts would be too harsh at part throttle. After all this is my daily commuter and I regularly tow. The drill bit for step 1 is .067 or 1/16 inch. The step two is 3/32 or .093 inch. I went with 5/64 or .078 inch (not in kit).

Are you refering to a Factory Tech Valve body upgrade or an actual Ford factory valve body ?
