Question 4R70W and Temp Gauge

Has anyone installed a Temp Gauge on a 4R70W trans yet? And if you have how hard was it, where did you put the sender, and will it void my warr.? I am assuming that I have the 4R70W since I have a U in the doorjamb.

One simple way to verify your trans is by the trans dipstick. If it says only use mercon IV then you have the 4r70w. I am in the process right now of installing a trans temp. There is an acess port on the drivers side marked 'line'. this will do, but a better spot is in the outgoing cooler line. it will not void your warranty, as long as you do a good job (no dirt, metal in trans).

Here's another way to verify that you have the 4R70W: All 4.6L trucks have the 4R70W.

The 4R100 has never been teamed with the 4.6L

Yep, but he already did it the "simplest" way. He has the "U" on the door jam sticker. U=4R70W and E=4R100 (and earlier E40D).

Cool

I put the sender where the pressure test plug was.. I figured that it was better to test the fluid where it get the hottest. What is your normal operating temp? I have not towed yet, and I am in the 180-200 degree range.

Mine doesn't start till 140 I run 140 to 150 on a 85 degree day, not towing, and the highest I have recorded so far was 170 on an 80 degree day towing my 4500 pound camper up a long step mountain grade (7 miles of 6-7%).

You don't mention having the towing package. It sounds like you could use an auxiliary tranny cooler to me. Those temps are on the edge especially for not towing.

Hey how about posting the part number for your sender unit. Others with the 4R70W will want this number.

Question

I noticed that I had a little trans fluid leaking today, and I screwed the sender in a little further. Now the temprature dropped considerably! I wonder why? Any ideas? I am going to hook up the trailer and hop on the freeway, I will post my findings later. One more thing, my truck came with the "factory" hitch, and has the "tow package" according to the sticker. How would I make sure that I have this option?
As for the part number, it all came as a complete kit from AUTOMETER, Part #4357 (Trans Temp). Saw it @ Summit's Web site, orderd it from the local speed shop here for 36.23.

Hmmmm??? Now I'm confused too. Only way to be sure is to trace those tranny lines to an auxilliary cooler to be sure I guess. But I can only guess why you saw a drop with the sender in further. Not sure why. Very interesting. Keep us updated on it.

Thumbs up

FORDTRK & cphilip:

Those are some great pics of a mod I didn't know I needed......till now. Lookin' sweet. You couldn't have picked a better spot to mount it, too. For towing and spinning tires, that gauge is invaluable. Thanks alot for making me want to spend more money! One question: How much fluid had to be drained (or was lost) to get the sender in?

I did not lose any fluid at all! And all of the credit for the mounting position has to go to cphilip! I only put it there because I saw his.

I lost about 5 ML's. You got to be ready with your finger and lord help you if you forgot to get the sender ready and nearby.

I chose the spot by looking around for a spot that had nothing behind it and that could be seen at all times with the gear selector in drive. I took a piece of paper cut in a two inch circle and taped it there and then felt behind the spot and even inserted the whole gauge in from behind to be sure.

Do it! Its really an easy Mod and pretty cheap too.

My guess is that you were having a problem with the sending unit being grounded. The extra turn prolly seated it good and solved the ground problem.
