Unhappy Trans shudders when shifting at low rpms

At various times at low speed my 97 does a shudder when trying to shift. I don't know if it's shifting up or down but always at low speed. It's an auto with 4.6 v8 with 48,000mi. If I'm giving it gas to speed up it does not happen only at a constant speed.
Any ideas? Do I need service?

SGT_611,

9 time out of 10 it sounds like the torque convertor. I just replaced 1 on a 2000 F-150 with the same problem.

Have you changed the transmission fluid? That will usually correct a shudder.

TRY THIS FIRST, I was truly amazed, then SELL it

My Wife has a 97 T-Bird, 4.6L
Her trans has been shuttering SO BAD for the last few months. I've been telling her to Baby it until we can trade the car in.
She came home last Friday and said, Now it is shuttering thru all gears. SOMETHING I DIDN'T NEED TO HEAR! So I took it to Ford Sat morning and played STUPID. Said I have this slight shuttering at lockup and would a flush take care of it. The Tech said he thought it might, so $100.00 later it runs like a new car. It was a BG system flush & fill. Best $100.00 I've spent in a long time.
Piece of Crap T-Bird is still going to be owned by someone else real soon. I will now sell it retail, instead of taking the pipe on a trade-in.

I have just experienced the same problem. Thought I was doing the right thing with a flush at Jiffy Lube. Now it shudders in OD at low speed and a bit with moderate acceleration. Any ideas???

At about 2800 miles my 2000 f-150 acted like it was low on trany fluid. Yes 2/3 qt. low I refilled it. 1000 miles later I casualy metioned to the dealer to look for a loose connection when at an oil change. Diagnoses bad seals (pump and torque converter seals replaced). When I got it back there was a very noticable 1-2 shift shudder. After 1 week I took it back. They dropped the pan and said there was a lot of metal in it.Now the question is wether I will get a new one or reman.Screw me ford and you will never get me back.

Question

sgt-611 Have you resolved this problem with the low speed/rpm shudder? This sound exactly like my newly aquired noise/problem with my E4OD sound started just after a recent daeler trannsmission flush. I have had bad tranny luck in the past on other trucks and hope like hell this is not a major problem, but if it is I would like to know before warranty expiration in 10,000 miles. At any rate your trannies diagnosis may arm me with the info I need when approaching the dealer.

Red face

I have the same prob. with mine. Never did it when I bought it(had 92K miles on it). Then I did a fluid/filter change(about 100K), and it started. Didn't do it that often, just now and then. Since I have been towing my 4wheeler lately(w/overdrive OFF), it seems to have gotten more frequent. Only does it in OD(not towing-I don't tow with overdrive on) at 40-50mph with steady or light acceleration(OD kicks in at about 39mph). Has done it 2-3 times at 60/70 at steady speed. I read on site somewhere that this was normal and wouldn't hurt anything, but it's getting me kinda concerned. Currently 118,000 mles. Can someone shed any light?
TIA

Pat
mine did the same thing under warrenty. Dealer flushed & filled with MerconV and fine since. You may have got MerconIII in the change cause that's what it calls for.

My truck has been at the dealer all weak having door cracks(both doors) fixed so I have not been able to diagnose further. I did however have the mechanic take a ride with me so that I could reproduce the noise, he felt it was external, heat shield or exhaust. I'm still not so sure, I did check for anything loose two weeks ago while changing front/rear diffs., transfer case lubes. I did pull my request for them to check it out at $80 hour.
I plan to check it out this weekend assuming I get it back today as planned, I'll post anything I find.
