Greetings from a new member but a FORD Fan!
I have been reading the threads about trans.
You guys are scaring the shezznit out of me!
I have a 92 F150 with a 302. Now all the research I have done indicates it is E4OD.
This is the original Transmission. It had no
problems until given to my teenage son to drive. The truck has 160K miles and the motor is still good. The problem is the Trans. Since it has been in the hands of the lead footed (when out of sight) son it has developed a leak which is coming from the pan area. It will sometimes sit there and spin. And the latest adventure, stalled in the stall at the Sonic. When this happened, I went to retrieve it. I placed it in gear and it spun and whined. Forward or reverse it spun. I placed it in N. My son tried to push it backwards and it was frozen solid. To me it felt like the rear brake was on. After pushing the OD off and giving it a little more throttle it took off.
I ran it home and it seemed OK. I started investigating rebuilds and repairs and darn near messed my pants when I saw the lofty price tag for a rebuilt E4OD. And after reading the different posts on the web, I have a few questions.
1. If it has to be rebuilt, what upgrade or what type of replacement should I use?
2. If I buy rebuilt, is there a substitute?
(buy this I mean the upgraded version of E4OD you folks mention in the postings)
3. Will any other standard transmission work for this 92-302. Its getting old and I wonder if the truck is worth the hefty price of the E4OD rebuild.
4. Should I have the gaskets and seals replaced, service the trans, and see if that helps? Maybe a sensor or two!
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Besides it will get him out of my 93 quicker!
Where are you at? I am a transmission repairman at the plant where that tranny is built and I do rebuilds on the side. I can get you a ready to install E4OD for about $1000, exchange, it costs about $100 to ship it to a business or I deliver within 100 miles of cincinnati. As far as upgrades, I'll automatically install any availible upgrade to whatever core I use. I can also do any upgrades you want very cheap if your interested in a shift kit or converter upgrade. All the info I need is on the ID tag on the side of the transmission, and you'll get a good box. For what it's worth, it sounds to me like you have a problem in either the forward clutch or the low-reverse clutch, both are pretty far down in the transmission.
Let me know if you're interested, if you've looked around, you know that I'm much cheaper than a reman and you get a box that's basically the same as a remanufactured transmission.

I learned the hard way Everytime I broke something on the car dad let me use,I had to pay for it. Just my opinion, but sitting around without transportation for awhile saving up money for repairs would keep this from happening again We all have to learn sometime,,,,Again,,this is just the opinion of a stranger. Good luck,,,,,98

If I thought my tranny was about to leave me stranded, I'd jump at Factory_Tech's offer -- given the many posts of his I've read -- and since he's married to my daughter (only kidding about one of them, however).
