Unhappy Transmission whine

I recently purchased a 1998 Supercab 4x4(4.6, auto trans, auto 4x4, 32k miles and out of warranty). When it is cold out (under 35 degrees), the transmission whines for the first few minutes after the engine is started, and for the first 3-5 miles.

In all temperatures, when driving between 30-40 mph, the transmission will whine when shifting between gears and will continue to around 60 mph or so. Up to 30-35 mph, the shifts do not have any whining sound. What is causing this? Is this normal? Transmission level when I purchased the truck was 1/2 quart low, but now it's at the full mark.
