Hey Guys,
I wanted to know what the proper way
to put my F150 in 4wd low. I have the
selecter on the floor. No matter how I do
it, I get grinding????
I thought you come to a complete stop, put
the truck in Neutral and put it into 4low...

You are following the correct procedure, and the grinding is normal, I get it sometimes and sometimes I don't. Alot of times if you shift too slow it will grind.

You might need to have your foot on the brake too. I have the console switch selector but it will not shift to 4lo until the truck is stopped, in neutral, and brake applied. I also have to keep the brake on till I shift to a drive gear because if I let off of the brake before I shift from neutral, the tranny boots itself back to 4hi. Hope this helps.

I didnt't know about tranny shifting to 2h when engaging 4-L. I'll go out & try it.

98silverf150,

It is normal if the vehicle is still moving. See the problem is the way the tranny is stopped from moving.
If you are in neutral the transmission output shaft should not be moving or if it is it is very slow. The input shaft of the T-case is not moving so some grinding or clunk will occur. If you left it in drive the tranny output shaft would be turning and a rather large jerk would be felt when it was connected to the stationary T-case input shaft. Now to further complicate things where is the grinding coming from? Is it heard after you shift or when the shifter reaches its limit of travel?

Regards

Jean Marc Chartier

I just tried the 97 with knob-turn 4x4 & it'll go into any gear in 4x4 lo with or without the brake & stay in 4-lo. May be they changed this in newer models but I wouldn't know why. If you go to 4-l, you're getting serious.

Red,
My truck is a 97 as well. I can shift to any gear when in 4lo too. I double checked about the tranny automatically putting itself in 4hi with the selector in 4lo and found out that I was on a driveway with a slight incline..What happened was that with the selector in 4lo and the dash indicators showing 4lo and the drive in neutral, the truck started rolling backwards slowly and as soon as the wheels started turning the system shifted itself from 4lo to 4hi even though I didn't change the switch. I think this is so that someone can't switch to 4lo while the truck is moving and having the tranny in neutral. I think mabye that is why I said about the brake thing too...Hope that clarifyed what I meant (or made it worse ::duck:: )

Thanks Guys, I'll go and try it and
see what happens...
JMC: to answer your question, it grinds
right when I try to shift it into 4low.

I also heard that when you shift out
of 4X4 you should back the truck up????
Is that true???

no need to back up in the 97 and new f150s.However you still need to stop and put it nuetral to take it out of 4 lo. to get out of 4 hi just turn the nob or move the lever to the appropriate (2wd) place no stopping .
