I have been noticed that when it is below 40 degrees, the tranny won't shift into overdrive until it has warmed up. It usually only takes 5 minutes or a few miles but is this normal? When I leave the office, I'm right on the highway so it is very noticeable.
Any ideas folks?
Mine is exactly the same. I believe this is done to reduce emissions until the engine is warmed up to a pre-determined temperature. I consider this "normal" and wouldn't worry about it.

Can't say as though I've experienced this . . . my OD will always trun on in cases where I want it to (usually I drive with it off . . . so I have to turn it on before it will engage . . . highway, etc.).
This is all year . . . it doesn't change when it gets cold . . . today it is around

Are you guys sure it's not just the torque converter not locking up? In extreme cold (not 40;lower), mine still goes into 4th gear/overdrive, but the torque converter does not lock up until it's warm? It may feel like another gear, but it's not. If so, this is normal.
It's not just Ford. My father has a Saab 9-5 w/the annoying shift up light. At a steady cruise in fourth when the engine is cold, the shift light is off til the engine hits a certain temp. The Auto heat/fan kicks on at the exact same moment the upshift light comes on. I just wish I could default my O/D to off when I start the truck.

I have the same condition. I asked my service department and was told it's the torque converter that doesn't lock-up until around 100-120 degrees or so. I think I also read a reply somewhere on this board from Factory_Tech that confirms this. I have a buddy with a '92 with the AODE that does the same thing.

I used to work on GM transmissions and it was the case that the engine required warming up before lockup would occur. I am sure that it is the same here.
