Tranny knocking? Torque conv.? Help!
I have a knocking sound in my truck that kind of goes along with the idle. I was thinking it was an engine problem, but the trans has started to slip and clank when I go around a corner,or when I left off the gas then reapply. I recently moved to an apartment complex that has some mild up and down grades. Tonight the trans slipped momentarily while going up a hill
and immediately went back into gear. This happened in what I believe was second gear and was no where near a shift point. It just jumped in and out. This has happened each time I go up this hill.
The fluid level is fine and I'm approaching the service interval for a fluid
change. I will mention this wierd behavior
to them and get them to make a notation on it for me. Before the slipping started, the trans would have a sort of sluggish shift, like it was at half power and then complete the shift normally. Sorry for the incredibly long post, but I'm just trying to get all the info in here. Could a bad torque converter make knocking noises?
I've never had one make noise before....
Thanks for any help,Sincerely!,,,,,98
Check your slip yoke. I replaced mine 3x. Also, have a mechanic inspect the under side of your truck for major cracks, trans MTG BRKT, exhaust and frame yes frame. They have actually replaced some frames due to cracking. Look for sheared bolts in trans.
The truck/trans mtg brkts are too rigid not allowing the components to breathe causing part/s failure and binding of components. TSB 96-21-14 and TSB 97-23-13. Good luck, I am looking at the Z71'S.

I'm taking it to a dealer,Tuesday. I'll mention those things to them while I'm
dropping it off. I just moved the infamous
condensor(a/c) harness,and magicly,the
trans has begun to act right again... Maybe it's just a coincidence,,something may have been blocking fluid flow in the
trans, causing the slippage and other problems. It seems to be shifting okay again, and no slipping? Too wierd,,since
I don't think that harness has anything to
do with the tranny at all......I'll let you all know how it turns out when I get it back,,98

My tranny was slipping at take off and shifting real hard into drive. I also had a knock at startup until I put the tranny in gear. After a fluid change, recirc., and filter change the shifting is fine but I have still have the tranny knock at start up.
