Post Mercon V in early E4OD

1993 F150 4.9 engine
I did a transmission fluid/filter change including TC drain. This transmission calls for Mercon but I used Mercon V according to some advice I got.
I've notice a rattle/knock from the transmission when idling but I'm not positive the mercon V caused it.
Can Mercon V be used in this Transmission?
Should I change back to regular Mercon?
How would mercon V cause this noise?

I was under the impression that the latest version of Mercon, i.e. V, was suitable for all previous requirements but not vice versa. I'm no expert, not even close, but I don't see how mercon V would cause the noise. What tranny do you have?

Is used a breaker bar to listen to various part of the transmission. The noise is loudest from about the middle 2-3 inches above the transmission pan gasket.
And I was in error It also happens while driving though barely audible with the normal roar of the engine.
Noise is definately loudest when engine is warm.
can an overfilled tranny cause this?
Or for that matter , what normally happens when you overfill a tranny?

That Mercon V cost a hunk of change and I'd hate to have to throw it away , but I will if I must.

Ford says not without causing damage.

"Should I change back to regular Mercon?"

Just as fast as you can get the Mercon V out of there!

"How would mercon V cause this noise?"

You are running a fluid that Ford expressly prohibits. They made this recommendation because they know that it causes problems. This noise is one of those problems.

Mark,
Thanks for the info. Even though it's gonna hurt I'll throw all that expensive fluid away and put some cheap fluid in ( regular mercon).
Just out of interest . What exactly is happening with the mercon V to cause this noise in the E4OD?
Can you direct me to a source for more information on this?
Has anyone else had this problem? Surely someone out there has tried mercon V in their E4OD tranny.

I'd have to listen to yours to be able to geuss what the noise is. Some that I have heard have been torque converter, and some are clutches rattling.

I have seen E4ODs that wore out way too early from using Mercon V. The E4OD just does not like that fluid.

If you want a good Mercon rated fluid use Mobil 1. I have seen very good results with it.

Mark,
The noise is not coming from the torque converter . It's loudest from the middle of the transmission about 3inches above the oil pan on the drivers side.
Any idea whats in this area that could cause the rattle.

A little history,
1. Complained of shudder problem . Changed transmission fluid(and filter) for regular mercon which greatly helped shudder but did not eliminate it.
2. Changed to Mercon V . No difference.
3. Had Torque converter replaced by shop. Shudder eliminated.

The rattle was there before TC replacement.

It sounds like something is loose in there . Could it be the filter . It just snapped in . Seemed like a flimsy mounting method.

Note that it is loudest when the engine is HOT.

There have been some transmissions that have clutchs that rattle. The plates are splined to the cylinders and sometimes rattle.

The good news is this doesn't hurt anything, it is just annoying.
