4.6L Manual Transmission Fluid Change

I recently drained the old transmission fluid out of my 97 4.6L 5sp manual and "Attempted" to refill it with Quaker State 4x4 synthetic blend (Mercon V) Tranny Fluid. The specifications in the owner's manual says the pan hold 3.75 quarts. I put in about 2.5 quarts and the fluid started coming back out the filler hole!!! This alarmed me at only 2.5 quarts. I have been driving it a little and it doesn't seem to be doing to bad, but shifting seems a little rough at times. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY CLUE WHAT COULD BE GOING ON? If so, please let me know. I just bought this truck about 3 mos. ago and I don't want the tranny to die.

Did you happen to pay attention to how much you drained out? did you notice whether it was filled above the fill plug before you drained it? Is it a 4x4? If so, are you sure you did the transmission and not the transfer case, its capacity is only 2 qts?

Thanks for helping me out...I guess I am more stupid than I thought. It was the transfer case. Don't think I can drain the tranny on my own. I guess I'll have to take it somewhere. At least I didn't ruin anything.

Well, I don't want to discourage you from doing it yourself. Look at it this way, the proceedure is pretty much identical, so if you can change the transfer case, you can do the transmission. Good luck, and I'm glad we solved the mystery

The tranny fluid is very easy to change, there are two plugs on the driver side, the upper one is the level, the lower one with a magnet is the drain. Leave the upper one in when you drain it and it won't come out so fast. If you fill it on level ground it should take a little less than 4 quarts. Don't forget to clean the metal "fur" off the magnet.
