Question Too high RPM b-4 shifting 1st to 2d, 4.6 w/3.55LS '99 model

Engine screams to the point it seems the valves are gonna "float" before shifting from first to second. This maybe ok for others, but not me-especially when towing bassboat. Shouldn't have to make it shift with my foot should I?

How high is too high? My 97 with the 4.6L used to go to 4500-4700rpms at wide open throttle. Heck, my 99 V10 does now. Towing with a good deal of throttle it would shift around 3800-4200rpms.(peak hp btw) Didn't bother me a bit. The rev limiter will kick in and shut it down before any engine damage happens.

If I dump it to the floor, with out a load such as a trailer, My truck shifts out of 1st at 5200 rpm with the Super Chip....I like that!

I guess being from the old school(where RPM's were relatively low because of BIG cube displacement developing the ponies)means I must adapt to Indy-type revs w/matching sweet sound of POWER out the ***.
NO PROBLEM! Let those ponies run, huh?

When I had my 97, when I towed, sometimes on hills to maintain the speed limit I'd kick it down to second and run 4000 rpms plus for several miles. The truck seemed to like it. So yeah, let her run.

I'm not sure there is a rev limiter. If I floor it (passing someone), it'll downshift two gears and spin like 6k rpm

moveover...Sounds like the way mine does so I'm taking 99 in for check up. High revs are one thing, but I swear, it con't be good on an engine to consistently do this. Will post results of "dealer explaination" next week.-Larry

larry you never said what engine you have.
I don't have than problem on my truck, most shifting is below 2000rpm in normal driving.

Larrym67.......I think I know what your are saying. When I was towing my trailer my truck would hold second gear@3,800 to 4,000 rpm on a hill. BUT it seemed to "be at home" at that rpm. I did some research and also talked to Tim Alsop a Ford powertrain engineer. It was said that these OHC engines are made to rev and should be considerd normal. Now..... how high are you running? Also what motor do you have? AND how much are you towing? It could be that it is a tranny sensor problem.

mlaugh........trk is 99 w/4.6, auto, 3.55
lim slip and 255-16 tires. Towing 16ft skeeter bass boat carolina mtns. (everywhere is uphill)LOL...
seriously, having run some hi-po 289 Ford mustangs like I have now I'm used to winding one up till it says 'nuff and then some more. I'm probably just not used to this pkg/design yet like some say, but don' want to have dealer say I blew engine due to abuse/misuse and not get it replaced, if y'all know what I mean. Gonna let my mech @ dealer put it thru its paces and if it blows, it blows. Then we'll go from ther I suppose.

99XLT, 4.6, AT, 3.55LSD, ProGate, no mods yet but I'm paying 'tention to al y'all's posts here!

mlaugh.....BTW it'll hit 5800 - 6000 RPM if I don't get off it w or w/o boat. Could be a sensor on second thought.

Thumbs up

Just returned from dlr to have shift complaint clarified. Mech drove it and said it WAS designed to BE a "screamer" an to ENJOY! Since I trust th'good ol'boy, I definitely will. Guess I'm getting to the "old F**t age" but second childhood should not be far behind!

No mods yet but waiting to glean the best of what you rodders come up with that I can justify spending $$$$'s on.

I have basically the same setup and notice the same scream'n when I punch it hard. I wasn't really so worried about the engine as the 4.6 has actually been around long enough to be tried and true and has not had many complaints. My concern is with the tranny (4R70W). Seems to me that the slip heat must be rising very rapidly under these conditions and this tranny doesn't seem to have the near spotless record that the 4.6 has.

Still haven't changed anything, but am considering having dealer re-program tranny shift pts to better suit my style of driving since romping it in city traffic tends to grab the attention of cops when it downshifts to low range. Also, it has to be better on gas mileage and save wear and tear on tranny in long run. BTW, just traded my '65 Mustang for a '94 Eddie Bauer Explorer w/V6. Anything I should watch out for? It has 90K miles but is a 1-owner and in like new condition from what I can tell at this point.
