Question Should I Replace the Factory Tranny Cooler??

My '99 SC XLT did not come w/ a towing package so I assumed it did not have an aux tranny cooler. Well I went online and bought a B&M cooler from www.carparts.com ($41.00). A couple daze later, I climbed under the truck to see how tough it would be to install when,to my suprise, there is a aux cooler already installed. So I jumped on the horn and called to cancel the order. They said no problem and I thought "whew". Anyway a couple daze later, guess what shows up in the mail? You got it that B&M cooler.

Well I started looking at it and realized two things. 1) it's larger than the stock cooler and 2) it's not the "Tube and fin" type cooler so it is probably more efficient.

This brigs me to my questions. 1) do all '99 5.4 come w/ aux tranny coolers or did I get lucky? and 2) should I go ahead and replace the stock cooler w/ the better one?

Wadda ya think??

Make sure the cooler you found was for the transmission and not the power steering or the engine.Mine has a trans cooler and a little power steering cooler next to it.
Satisfied that it is for the transmission, why not run both in tandem if there is room to mount both?

You better be real sure you are seeing a Tranny cooler. Since you say you are sure you did not get the towing pacakge I am concerned for you. Did you maybe get the HD cooling package? It would give you the Tranny cooler and it was a different option from the tow package. There are other coolers (or things that look like coolers) down there. AC evaporator and power steering cooler come to mind. The stock tranny cooler was designed to work with the radiators internal tranny cooler, The after marketts are designed to work alone and can be bigger. Most leave the radiator one in series when they install an aftermarket unless they have an older vehicle and are worried about the radiator one leaking. The tranny cooler in my F250 is huge but difficult to spot as it sits between the radiator and the AC evaporator. It is about half the size of the Radiator. That real little cooler up front and to the bottom is for the power steering pump. Good luck.

Nope, definatly a tranny cooler. (there is also a power steering cooler next to it) it is on the pass side right in front of the radiator.

Lines go from the tranny to the radiator, to the cooler and back to the tranny.

Question

im wondering the same thing on my 95..there is a small cooler on the passenger side of the radiator.. i thought it was power steering but i went and followed the lines into and out of it and they went to the raditor and then to the trans.i bought the truck used. it does not have a hitch, so does than mean i have a towing package or what?

From what I understand, A towing package should include:

High output Alternator
Tranny Cooler
Receiver type hitch
7 pin trailer wiring harness
Heavy Duty shocks and springs??

If you got these then you got a towing package.

Thumbs up

Badangler,

A larger capacity radiator is also included with the tow package or the HD Electrical/cooling option.

And a bigger battery. 115 amp vs 72 amp if I am remembering right.

Badangle, don't forget what Dunbarton and I have already refered to: The "HD Cooling package" possibility. It would give you the tranny cooler and the engine cooling and nothing else. Did you buy this truck used and not have the door sheet?

I've got the door sheet and it makes no mention of a "HD cooling package".

Got any ideas on how to tell if the Alt. is a High output??

Badangler,

Unless you have the towing package or HD Cooling & Electrical ($210 for '99) you must assume you have the standard alternator.

I can't specifically answer your question as to the setup of a standard F150 regarding any type of transcooler.

Realalizing that "HD Electrical and Cooling" could assume that the F150 equipped without this could have a "regular" trans cooler installed. Someone here should know this for a fact. I would start another thread specifically asking this. It's a valid question.

Use a small hand mirror to look at the back of the alternator where the wire(s) connect. Most have the rating painted near the connector.

After a second look at the window sticker I did notice it has a "6300# GVWR Package NO CHARGE".

What the heck does that mean?? You think that has something to do w/ the tranny cooler??

Again do all '99 5.4 come w/ a tranny cooler or did I get lucky??

Thats odd. I thought the 6300 GVWR was the *standard* package rating for the F150 SC? My F150 Lariat 4X4 had a GVWR of 6100 and that was standard for it. Nothing special and of course "no charge". Interesting.
