Question Major oil spill.

Went on a road trip this weekend on about a 45 min highway drive and 30 min city drive. During the visit we did lots of driving in town.

As I was driving on the highway at about 140km (I know it's little fast). I thought I may have noticed smoke for a quick second but didn't think of anything of it due to not having any problems before. We entered the city and truck was driving fine during heavy traffic until it finally just stalled. I put the tranny in Park and restarted with no problems. Traffic began to flow so I gave it a little gas and the transmission slipped and than finally hooked up at about 2500 rpm. It slowly began to get worse beginning only in 1st and when turning. As it got worse it slipped in all gears. Than when idling the rpm jumped up and down + or - 500 rpm. We noticed that it was leaking a large amount of transmission fuel. We pulled off the road right away. We did not hit or bottom out any where on this trip and truck has not had any major problems. Only engine mod is K&N.

Question- What would have caused this to leak? Is this common?

2000 Harley Davidson F-150. 5.4 L

P.S. The smoke may have been transmission fluid on the exhaust.

Thanks.

You didn't say where the fluid was comming from but I'll bet it was the transmission extension housing.

If your driveshaft has even a slight imbalance, high speed driving will cause it to vibrate enough that he brass bushing inside the housing will come loose and actually slide out and end up on the slip yoke, along with the rubber seal.

You had smoke because the extension housing is directly above the exhaust pipe.

The TSB is listed here:
Blowing seal

It's a design flaw. Ford has paid for the work when others had this problems. They should pay to fix yours as well.

LowRider,

Hope you don't have much hassle getting things fixed. From what others have said about what it was, thankfully it didn't get any worse and cause some mayhem.

Where'd you go that was 45 minutes away? Let's see, at 140... Red Deer or Banff?

Do you travel 16th Av NW in the hours of 6am-7am or 6pm-7pm? I think I've seen your truck a couple times. I'm in a plain old white 97 F150.

Seeing a few more Lightnings around Calgary these days too.

Good luck with the repairs.

That sounds about right. Neat.

Glad to hear Ford is taking care of you. What dealer do you use, out of curiosity?

LowRiderHD2000, you ahve any pics of your truck?

anyway, i noticed a few spots in my driveway and took the truck in. they said that the rear tranny seal was bad. i also noticed some red fluid on the front of the driveshaft when i was cleaning under the truck. is that what that tsb is referring to?

they didn't have the parts and had to order them in, so hasn't been fixed yet. its only a very small and slow leak so its still fine, but going to be fixed when the parts are in.

thanks
