'01 SuperCrew Question

Hi,

I may have a problem, but I wanted to post here first.

Last night I had to go across three lanes of traffic to get into a high way from a stop sign. I had to accelerate quickly to get out of the way of on coming cars (busy time of night). Anyway, I basically went from 0 to 35 (ran fine). After a short distance I came to a red light. When I left the red light, it felt like the truck did not want to go. Almost like it did not want to get into first gear. I came to a second redlight - same. I pulled off of the road and into a large parking lot. I tried to manually shift up from first to second, etc. Did not help. Once again, it felt like it did not want to engage. So from there I tried the opposite - gear down - when I went from 2nd to 1st (guessing at a speed of around 10-15 mph), it pulled back like I would expect - but it seemed to solve my issue. It ran fine for the rest of the night. I checked the transmission fluid this morning and it looked fine.

FYI: 2001 SuperCrew 5.4, 18,000 miles. I feel like I baby the truck. I do not tow and rarely ever get on the gas the way I did last night, but I have before and everything has been fine.

I will be taking it to a dealership this next week for regular service. I wanted to first see if anyone had any advice on what I should check in the mean time?

Thanks,
Mike

2nd gear?

mdelliott76

It almost sounds like you had it shifted into second manually
did you know in the transmission you have if you select 2nd there it will stay! it will not downshift so if you have it in second and try to a fast start it wont down shift like you would expect , maybe you already know this but it sounds like what you were describing was manually selected 2nd. just a thought , don't know if this helps , but I see you had not had a reply yet. and I know I have done this also without realising it! , Skully

I actually had it in Drive (Overdrive). That is what was so weird. Now that I think about it, it was almost like it was sitting in second gear once I did get to the red light. It seems like when I mashed the gas to accelerate, it went up to around 1000-1500 rps before it wanted to kick in. Even when it did kick in it was smooth. Not like when I did downshift manually from a higher speed where it pulls back.

I don't think that the dealership is open on Monday so it looks like I will be getting up a bit early on Tuesday.

Thanks for the comment -
Mike
