Looking for some help. I have a 5.4 with the E4OD and the overdrive light keeps blinking on me. Have taken it to local dealer three times with no long term luck. They have replaced gear inside the transfer case twice and replaced fluid due to supposed water in there swelling the gear. After 400 miles light started blinking again and took back to dealer. They put on diagnostic and found nothing wrong. For maintenance they serviced transmission. 20 miles later the light is blinking again. Any similar experiences or suggestions out there?
the only other time i hace heard of this it has been a loose connector on the O.D. selinoid. I would bet that is not the problem, but i bet it is the OD selinoid. i bet it is malfunctioning in some way. I dont know wat it could be, but i bet if you had it replaced it would solve the problem.
Although it is a terrible inconvenience, you really need to get back to the dealer asap.
The flashing O/D light is the transmission malfunction indicator. There is something wrong inside the transmission. If one of the electronic controls has failed, the transmission can destroy itself very quickly. Sometimes within just a few miles.
One other thing to check, is the O/D light itself. It's not likely that this is the case but if they scanned the computer and didn't find anything wrong, there may just be a loose wire leading up to the switch.
ZXI 1100 , cool name and a very fast bike! or is that the big jet ski? hummmmmm
I have a 2001 with 4x4 5.4l automatic 3.55 gears in the shop right now. I don't want to cause you and panic , because you have already done the right thing by taking it in to the dealer. I have read a couple other post here as well take the flashing od light seriously, mine started doing that Friday or Saturday of this week and my transmission craped out Saturday night 8/24 , mine was replaced under warrenty(sp)at 24,300miles no questions asked , but I didn't get much information from them either! keep the paperwork that shows you took it in and have tried several times to get them to fix it. that way you have a good record if it does fail. if you start hereing any loud pops you may want to call roadsid assistance or your local tow company. mine locked up so hard the rear wheels wouldn't roll see other post in transmission other and Screw pages.
again I am not saying this is going to happen to you , just one man oppinion, good luck I hope you have thousands and thousands of trouble free miles!
Well I got my truck back drive nice I was sure to try 4 hi and run through the gears and try th OD off and Overdrive and all seams very smooth , the paper work that for submitted read something like cust reports wheels wont move droped drive shaft and wheels spin freely , checked fluid level all fluids at proper level. ran computer code no abnormalities, droped transmission pan and found 9 OZ of metal to repair transmission would far excede replacement cost , recommended remodee is to exchange bad transmission for ford factory replacement. that is about it.
I got thinking one of the reasons the computer may not have had any information could be because I removed super chip before taking truck to the dealer as per instructions and disconnected battery to do so , so pehaps the code was lost when I did that? don't know just glad to have my baby back! I still love that truck!
My 01 F150 Suoercrew had the same problem. When I took it to the dealer it wasn't blinking but they did determine that the torque conventer was bad. They replaced it and it worked fine for a couple months and now it's starting to shift hard again. They say that's normal... Yeah right.
I have a different setup, mines a 98 4.6L 4X2. This problem also came up on my truck and I have the 4R70W and it occured at 22349 miles. Here is what they wrote up in my work order:
"Roadtest vehicle set elec trans diag eec test no codes press test trans press drop 3rd gear 50 psi specs 75 up diag trans nec to remove trans pan nec to remove main control nec to overhaul main control nec to clean filter and gasket nec to reassemble refill reroadtest ok"
I know you posted an update just thought you'd all like to know that this is nothing new and the dealers do know how to fix it correctly. This repair was done almost 3 years ago and I now have 75000 miles on the same truck and still going strong.
Just curious could anyone explain what all that means? I'm not too familiar with the guts of a transmission.
A good service department is more important to me than any other part of the dealership. The dealer that did this repair is now the same dealer that I purchase my vehicles from. No reason to shop around for price - got A-Plan, so service is the bottom line!
my wife's truck began to flash the od light day before, we took it in and they said the torque converter was bad and needed to be replaced. They now asked me if I wanted to have the rest of the tranny fluid replaced along with the filter at a cost of course. They said the new T converter would have fluid it in already, so I just needed the rest of the fluid and the filter and labor. Have you guys heard of this?
I have been getting a flashing OD light for a couple months now, but it only starts blinking when I go over 80-85 mph. My truck just turned 100,000 miles this week. The light does not seam to affect anything. No hard shifts or anything........ after reading your comments though I suppose I shoud get it checked ASAP
On my 2002 screw I had the blinking light after I installed the shift kit. OD worked fine and didnt seem to be any problem. The kit shifted too hard to I changed the settings and reseated all the connectors etc and light went off. My understanding is it could be any multitude of problems causeing the light to flash.
