Freeplay in clutch pedal.

Good morning, I have a 2000 F150 4.2 5-speed with 38,000 mi. Over the last 2000 mi. the freeplay in the clutch pedal has increased. Oddly, it changes over the course of the day. In the morning, when the weather is cool, there is no freeplay. Later in the day, as the temp. increases, so does the freeplay, up to approx. 1.25 in. before I feel pressure on the pedal. The fluid level is correct. It does not leak. I'm thinking 'slave cylinder'? Has anyone else experienced this? What was the fix? Thanks for any input. Mike

Hello and welcome.

It may be something major but it also may be bushings in the pedal assembly. You might want to see if it looks like that is where the problem originates.

Good luck!

Mike,

I have an 01 4.6L. At about 28,000 miles, the clutch pedal started behaving just as you described (alot of slop sometimes, absolutely no slop others). I found that when it started getting play in it, I could remove the play by pumping the pedal quickly several times (when pumping would only push until I started getting resistance, not all the way to the floor). Anyway, I took the truck in to the dealer and they thought it was a slave cylinder. Since replacing the slave on 4.6 means dropping the tranni, I ordered a master cylinder and installed it myself ($50). I figured that I might as well try the master first since it was easiest. Anyway, that seems to have solved the problem completely (knock on wood). Hope this helped.

Chuck

short throw shifter?

We are still waiting to hear from Hurst that they will be coming out with a short throw shifter for our trucks. It won't eliminate the grind/rake but it should help.

I have a 2001 Sport XLT with the 5 spd 4.6 and had the clutch play problem, the dealer replaced the Clutch Master Cylinder (their terminology-may be the same as slave cylinder-not sure), anyway the problem is gone.

Tranny still feels like there is gravel in it and the 2nd - 3rd gear rough shift comes and goes. I saw mention of a different shifter helping the problem and I also hear factory may have put non synthetic fluid in the tranny instead of synthetic. Any definite fixes

Ok, first I admit I don't know much at all about trans. I have the 4.2 with 5-speed. I have read here some of you talking about shifting problems from 2nd to 3rd. My truck has approx. 26,000 miles on it. It sometimes feels like it don't want to go into 3rd from 2nd and a few times even mashed the gears a bit (the slightly grinding sound) and I did have the clutch in all the way.

My question is; is this not so uncommon for the 5-speeds and I should just live with it? Or should I be taking it into the dealer for repair? If so, what would they repair?
