Unhappy Help Quick PLEASE!!!!

I am changing my transmission fluid.
00 F-150 5.4L 4X4 with auto

I got the pan off and fluid was draining. Well
I looked in the pan and the magnet was there and
some fluid.

However, there was something else there also. A pale yellow
plastic piece. It looked like a float. It was shaped kind of like a top,(kids toy), but more round at the bottom with a round rubber o-ring at its middle and a small round upper shaft, (like the top of a top, the part you grab and spin.)

The filter was still conected so it couldnt have come from in the tranny where the filter connects. I removed the filter and looked everywhere for a spot for this thing to fit, somewhere that it could snap in. But there was no spot for it.

Is it possible this is some error from manufacturing? Can anyone guess what this is?

-----( I ) <--- This is what it looks like. Consider the o-ring
where the "I" is.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Chris.

Hi Chirs...

Nothings broke. Its a plug that was put in at factor and at some point it ends up in the pan.

It may have something to do with finally inspection etc...maybe someone here can say for sure...i forgot.

Guess thats your first a/t fluid change? Usually that plug is removed after 1st change.

So sleep easy, i dont think anythings broken.

Good luck...OT

I have heard that it's the dipstick/fill tube plug from assy.

There's all sorts of plugs in the trans when they receive it, before installation. From a manufacturing point of view, it is quicker and easier to push some plugs in, than to pay someone the extra minute or two to pull the plug.

In this case, they just push the plug into the pan when they install the dipstick. The plug just sits in the fluid, until the first filter change. This is also a good indicator to used buyers, as well as warranty claims that the fluid and/or filter may never have been changed.

As you may have inferred, this is normal.

Hope this helps.

Tony
