4R70W Self-Destructs in Passing Gear - 3rd & 4th Gone in a blink!
Going from second into third, it seemed like park brake came on -- tranny shuddered like in two gears. After several attempts to continue, the tranny lost third and fourth gears.
Only First and Second gear remained.
At 42K miles, there's no excuse for a transmission to self-destruct!
This truck was built in 10 of 1999 as a 7700 series (was called the F-250LD the prior model year) -- and it appears that subsequent 7700 series trucks went back to the 4R100 tranny instead of the 4R70W.
Sounds like your direct clutch is burnt up. This is usually the result of a bad intermediate one-way clutch or the direct clutch simply burned up. A failed one-way clutch can also cause a loss of 3 and O/D but usually gives a loss of 2nd soon afterwards. The tranny requires a rebuild...also be sure to make sure the radiator is also replaced or at a minimum flushed both ways. You can get a replacement tranny (built the RIGHT way) from www.reinhartautomotive.com
Being just barely out of warrenty miles wise I think you can still get Ford to fix it if you make a big enough stink about it. If you choose to rebuild it yourself..shoot me an email if you need help.
HI!... I ended up losing 3RD gear and OD on my 1ST 4R70-W tranny. I did a WOT upshift from 2ND gear to 3RD and my truck slowed down and then a huge bang!!! Well when I brought the tranny in to have a RACE DUTY build done on it (WORLDWIDE TRANSMISSIONS) it ended up being a snapped intermediate shaft. Apparently I snapped the intermediate shaft off at the thickest point. I doubt that is what happened to you but you never know. It seems that I break everything on my truck that is'nt supposed to be breakable. Last week I found out that I broke "FORD's" indestrucktable 9.75 rearend. The LIGHTNING guys can't seem to break it but for some reason I did.
I understand what your saying. Yeah, thats a bummer and being out of warranty by a small time frame. Geez!
99SC F250LD a/t 4R70W (GCWR: 12,000#) BD: 11/98. Tranny went out at 16,500mi. Do tow..but that was 2months after last tow..in town. At least i wasnt towing on road.
OD(TRB) light was flashing..in my case the 2/3 upshift wasnt right.
Tranny was rebuilt/repaired.. direct clutch worn/valve body overhauled. Work done under warranty..no questions asked.
So, what can be done to make the 4R70W stronger?
Each time i tow (even solo)...have to admit...not a real easy feeling. Maybe just cause it went out first time? Door crack/engine sounds like mini-diesel/ front suspension? pop/bang noise...but it runs fine etc. Have to say...after 3...really dont know if there will be a 4th Ford truck? No, i'm not that old , i just lost some confidence in Ford.
What do yall do to your tranys I got a little over 60,000 miles on my truck and no engine or tranny problems yet and I get on the gas hard when getting onto Interstates and taking off from traffic lights if i'm first in line.
I don't work on 4R70s so I really can't help you with the problem, but I have the real story on the "green stickers".
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THESE TRANSMISSIONS!!!!
The green stickers are a test program, that's all. Every once in a while, they will put the stickers on the pans for a few days, or a week, to give them what statisticians call the "sample universe", out of these trannies, it is known that a few will fail, and when those units are taken in for service, Ford wants to see them for warranty analysis, something that some (but not all) warranty work gets. For the ones in the sample, they want them all back to see what went wrong. That's all. You'll get a new tranny instead of possibly getting the old one repaired (which is pretty rare anymore, actually)
It's going to the dealership tonight or tomorrow morning. I'm stopping by the drugstore for some Pepto Bismol on the way.
My dealership's service writers/managers are very helpful; but I always seem to end up with new scratches or dent or missing bolt/screw with each trip thru the door.
They have a sister dealership that I pass 2x a day -- but wouldn't take my truck there for any reason -- given a long track record of dissatisfaction with them.

Dude....I can get a reman 4R70W from my Ford dealer for $1700. And I guarentee you that they can too so they ain't paying for anything on that "deal" they made you. Hell I can build a bulletproof one for less than that price...you can buy a bulletproof one fr less than that.
My 2000 7700 was built in sept. '99. It has the 4R70W trans. I have always wondered why. It's great to know we are guinea pigs. My trany started leaking at about 20,000 miles. They replaced the seals in the pump. They were going to charge me for a trans. service when I requested the fluid be changed while they had it apart. Then they said I whould only have to pay for the filter, which I did. It hasn't blown yet with 31,000. Makes me wish I had just ordered a super duty. It wouldn't have been much more money, hell of a lot more truck.

I finally got a call from the dealer tonight -- they are waiting on an oil-to-air cooler (Ford recommends changing the stand-alone oil-to-air cooler when any rebuild/replacement is performed -- since it cannot be properly flushed) -- and I should be able to pick up the truck on Monday.
The One-Way-Clutch (reminds me of what I knew as a Sprague Clutch -- when working on Vietnam Era military AWD's) snapped the inner race -- which apparently explains the two-gear-at-once feeling it gave me.
The innerds of the transmission (mechanic took out the first clutch pack and the basket that contains the OWC) looked like new!
The clutches and band looked like new.
It was actually impossible to see why the transmission needed such extensive repairs.
It only took 60 seconds to get to the broken part (tranny on ground).
There were no "codes" -- and when the transmission reported that it was in 4th, it apparently free-wheeled.
