Post Shift Interlock Bypass.

I found this at www.flatratetech.com and I think it really is something everyone should know how to do. I read a few years ago about one of us on a hunting trip in the middle nowhere walking miles to a phone because he couldn't get it out of park.

Quote:
I just talked to someone the other day who did not know this, and I realize now that it's possible that most consumers don't because I don't think this information is printed in anything that consumers could readily access.
Most everyone knows by now, that your brake lights go out for whatever reason, might be a fuse, or the wire breaks at the hard shell connector on the stop light switch, your shifter lever won't move from park. So there you sit in a parking lot, got your good clothes on and now you're stuck.
Not so...There is a bypass built into the system but you'll have to follow me carefully on this.
If you get into a bind where your shifter does not come out of park even though you've got the ignition key in the run position etc., you can get the shifter to come out of park once, then start the vehicle in neutral. Here's how:
Pull the ignition key out of the cylinder all the way. Then, slide it back in as normal, but you're only going to turn it until you feel the VERY FIRST CLICK. Stop there and your shifter will come out of park and you can put it in neutral (making sure of course that your parking brake is firmly set). Then start you vehicle.
Now, this is by no means a permanent situation, but it will get you out of a bind.
Now, the first time you put it back in park, until the brake light concern is addressed, it will be stuck again, and you'll have to do this again.
Remember, the very first click and it will come out of park one time. Beats the hell out of calling a tow truck or getting into the fix yourself in the field.
Why they don't publish this (unless they've started and I don't know it) I don't know...just thought if this saves someone an unnecessary tow truck call, or gets them out of an emergency, then once again, we've done what we're here for.

Now you tell me! Thanks for the info. Should prove useful in the future. Not much I can do about the past, though.
