Tranny Problems??

I have a 1997 F 150 with automatic transmission. Do not know the service history of the tranny as I just bought the truck. Anyway the big problem that I am having is that once the truck takes off for the first time and shifts for 1 to 2, it seems like that then it just stays in 2nd even when coming to complete stop and then it takes off in 2nd. It will not shift into any of the other gears. Could this be a torque convertor problem or just something as simple as a sensor of some king telling it when to shift?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How many miles on the tranny? Has the fluid ever been changed? How does the fluid look/smell?

May be as simple as a fluid/filter change.

Fluid change and probably something is buggered somewhere else in the tranny, probably not the torque converter as you're still moving forward. There are a few solenoids in there as well.

Check your shift linkage and make sure it is working properly. Sometimes I've heard it can be in a different gear at the column than compared to what it's telling the tranny and the computer gets confused or something.

I was driving down the rode today and it would not shift out of second again so I pulled up to a light and shut the engine off, started it back up and it shifted fine the rest of the time I was driving it. Weird huh? Could this be some sort of electrical or computer problem? Will an OBDII code reader read codes or problems with transmissions??

This problem is definetly got me stumped. If I turn off the engine and then start it again, after noticing that it won't shift out of second, the truck will run and shift normal everytime. What could cause the problem that shutting off the engine and turning it back on would solve??\

change out the fluid and filter(you may find that the old filter is not all the way up into it,s carrier),get out as much of the fluid as you can by draining the torgue convertor.put in a can of seafoam trans tune and give it about a week. mine had the same problem and it cleared it up. seems that the soliniod valves were sticking and the seafoam cleaned them up

Seafoam Trans Tune

Hey TexFordD,
Do you remember where you got the Seafoam Trans Tune that you were talking about. I have looked at the local Autozones and Advance Auto parts store and have not been able to find it. Any info would be appreciated.

shift

Try this .....it cost nothing.

Disconnect the battery for like 20 minutes. Make sure your turn the lights on to drain any reserve power. Then reconnect and let it idle for 1-2 minutes. Then drive the $%it of out it. You know,.... full throttle starts and downshiflts etc. If you dont notice a change you better get that truck to the nearest Dealer.
