Jerking/kicking when coming to a complete stop..

I have an 02 4x4 4.6 auto with 3,000 miles...and am i wondering if i have a tranny problem...

Every time I come to a complete stop there is a jerk or kick of some kind, almost like a slip. This does not happen during rolling stops - only at stop lights/ signs, etc., when I have to come to a 'complete' stop.

Any ideas...tranny, brakes?

Chris

have the local ford garage lube your slip yoke splines. it worked on my '02 4x4 KR s-crew. i've been told by other folks here that this shouldn't have to be done, but this is what the local ford shop did to my truck and it got rid of that shudder...i'm no mechanic so i can' t tell you if there is anything wrong with your truck. the ford shop here said they regularly lube slip yoke splines so take that for whatever it's worth...

mine started out doing it only occasionally, and it is worse when it's cold outside...say below 50 degrees. in the last couple months it was doing it at virtually evey stop. i finally got the truck in on tuesday...they lubed the splines and it hasn't done it since then...

Sage,

When you go from Reverse to Drive, does your tranny take a good 1 1/2 to 2 seconds before you can press the accelerator? My 02 FX4 4x4 5.4L started out by having a delay from R to D, then it started "clunking" and slipping when stopping fairly quickly and trying to take off. I had the dealer check it out at about 8000 miles and the tech said that he could verify the problem but even after taking the tranny out and apart, he really couldn't tell what was wrong.

He did say that there was a seal or gasket in the area of the pump that was leaking internally and he replaced it. I have asked for a copy of the paperwork where the service was done and have yet to receive one. Needless to say, when I got my truck back, the problem was gone.

Ford has had some problems with the 4R70w tranny and yours may fall into one of the problems listed on alldata's web site.

Check out http://www.alldata.com/TSB/20/012017DA.html

This is for the 2001's, but my truck had the delayed engagement issue and is now working.

Hope some of this helps.

Creole

i've noticed that my truck takes a couple seconds to shift from drive into reverse, but otherwise is very quick from park to reverse and from reverse to drive...

TroyK, check out some of the TSB's on the URL that I listed. One of these may cover your trannys delay.

Even though my truck only had 8000 miles, I had already gotten used to it doing it's wierd things. When I picked it up from the dealer, it was like a new truck...wait a minute...it was a new truck. Anyway, it seemed to shift better all the way around.

actually, i'm not worried about it. my '01 s-crew did the same thing...so did my 99 ranger. seems to be a ford thing. and mine is only delayed when i shift from drive to reverse...no biggie.
