Question leaking-pinion seal

I have a 2000 F150 4x4 (56k miles). I noticed oil leakage where the drive shaft goes into the transfer case (rear axle). I took it to the mechanic and he replaced the pinion seal. Everything is fine now, just wanted to know if anyone has had this problem and knows what could have caused this.

Thanks

I have a similar problem with the leak. Mine has been doing it for a long time, but it has gotten alot worse recently. I always made sure the fluid is full. I wondered is adding the add-a-leaf made it worse because of the slight change in angle. Is this possible? Also, how much did could I expect to pay to have the pinion seal replaced?

Thanks in advance!

Extended warranty took care of mine. Pinion seal failed at 41,000. I have a '98 XLT 4.6. Yeah it's plenty hot here in S.W. Houston.

How much does a Rear Pinion seal replacement cost?? Just looked under my truck and it looks like I have the same problem. I'm not very happy about it either. Guess I better make a appointment at the dealership!

Back in the day when I used to 4-wheel more often it would happen on occasion. Usually from one of 3 reasons. We would get a lot of grass/tall weeds wrapped around driveshaft and they would slide down and wear on seal. A plugged breather tube wouldnt cuase preasure buildup and blow seal, and the most common one was due to bad u-joints causing a sloppy sharft rotation which put a lot of extra wear and tear on the seal.

In my old blazer I replaced the rear transfer case seal 2x within a couple months before I realized it was bad u-joints, but because of the CV (srping and ball loaded) it kept constant preasure on the u-joints so it was impossible to tell they were worn without pulling the thing apart.
