Shifting Problem

It does not happen everytime I drive it, but about half the time I drive it seems like the truck will not shift into the higher gears. I will be doing about 3500 RPM's at 55 m.p.h. Other times that I drive it I am only running about 2000 RPM's at the speed. No matter how far I push on the throttle it just won't shift. Any ideas on the problem, I have 84000 miles on my 1997. The overdrive is on all the time when I drive, so I don't think that is what it is. Anyway any help would be appreciated. Could exhausted tranny fluid cause this???

The more you press the throttle the less likely it is to upshift. Will it shift if you let off the throttle completely?

I don't think changing the fluid will help this problem, but if you have more than 20,000 miles since the last change it would be a good idea to change it.
