Exclamation Tranny Probs.

HELP!!! Here's the story (kinda long): I live in Germay with a 2001 2WD SuperCrew and have thought the world of the truck and have had NO problems with it until today. I was cruising the autobahn at about 85 mph or so when I noticed smoke trialing me. Scared, I pulled over to inspect and found tranny fluid all over the undercarriage. The most of it is concentrated around the area that the left exhaust connects to the right. I immediatly called ADAC (euro AAA) and had it towed to a dealership. When I started it up the line it up with wrecker A LOT of fluid was lost on to the ground. The driveshaft has some play in it at the output of the tranny that I have never noticed before. I have the 3/36,000 and need to know if I should be really worried. Thanks.

This would only be the 2nd time I've heard of the Super Crew transmission tailshaft/extention housing seal falling out while driving on the freeway. The bushing may have come lose as well. That's what it sounds like to me.

There is a TSB about this sort of thing but it doesn't list the Super Crew.

1997-2001 2WD F150 & F250's w/139" wheel base were covered.

I'm sure the dealer will figure it out. I wouldn't think you should worry too much.

If you search "housing" or "extention" in the transmission forum, you'll fine 30+ instances of this along with the TSB.

I had this happen to me also. The problem was related to driveshaft vibration and a poor tailshaft housing design. At first I had the tailshaft bearing replaced and used locktite to hold it in place. The bearing held up, however there was a slight vibration at 68MPH (since new) and a big vibration over 88MPH (since new).

I had the driveshaft replaced and the high speed (over 88MPH) vibration went away, as the balance and driveshaft design were much improved. However the 68MPH slight vibe was still there. Ford replaced the tailshaft housing with an updated and stronger design, the vibration is gone.

Many miles later I had a tranny failure and the replacement tranny has the older style of tailshaft housing. The 68MPH vibration is back.
