Shudder problem fixed, but now 2nd gear doesn't work right - Help!!
Hi all,
This is my first post to this forum, and I'm really hoping someone can accurately diognose the problem I am having with my transmission!
The problem started with the notorious 3rd to 4th gear "shudder" I've read so much about. I serviced the transmission including draining the fluid out of the tourqe convertor. That fixed the shudder problem, but now the transmission has a problem with 2nd gear; when it up-shifts or down-shifts into 2nd gear, the engine is severely loaded... In fact, with the engine idling in park, if you put the gear shift selector in 2nd gear, the engine stalls out... I know I used the right type of fluid as this transmission calls for Mercon only. It's a 1996 F-150.
I'm affraid if I take my truck to a transmission shop, they'll just tell me the whole transmission needs rebuilding, which would be very expensive :-(
Any help identifying what's wrong with my transmission would be greatly appreciated!
The only thing I can think to tell you ( assuming you used the right fluid and filter) is to drop the pan and check the filter to see if it's on tight. Sometimes the O-ring stays up in the tranny and the new one is also used giving you 2 O-rings.
Other times the filter drops down and breaks the seal, either way you might wanna drop the pan and double check it.
Is it possible that one of the electrical connectors inside the pan came loose??
Le Pew,
Thank you for your response. I pulled the pan for the fourth time and discovered I have a 4x4 transmission in my 2x2 vehicle. This requires a different filter. I also wiggled wires in the pan. I'm not sure what fixed the problem, but it's working fine now.
Thank you
AMILLS
If you dont mind me asking, what did you mean when you said "I have a 4x4 transmission in my 2x2 vehicle." could you please give a little more detail??
The pan on my transmission is deeper than a 2x2 trans,
there is a pick up tube on the filter to reach deeper in the
pan. I was told by a service mechanic that on occassion
Ford had put these transmissions in two wheel drive
vehicles. The guys at NAPA were pleased to learn this,
as they have had problems with customers complaining
about the filters being different. The filter you get when
you get the 2x2 filter kit does not have the pickup tube
on it, therefore the transmission starves for fluid.
You may have the wrong filter, but you most certainly don't have the wrong transmission. The 4x4 has a radically different extension housing, which enables it to bolt to the transfer case. the overall length is different, if you had the 4x4 box it would be several inches short of the driveshaft.
Some 4x2 models have what is incorrectly called the 4x4 pan, which is the deeper pan with a drain plug, with that pan you do need the long neck filter. All 4x4 models (4R100, not sure about the 4R70W) have the deep pan, but several 4x2 models have it, also.
What year, engine and tranny do you have? I can tell you what pan and filter you should have had from the factory. While an incorrect filter can happen, an error proofing device checks to see you have the right pan, and like i said, if you have the wrong extension housing (the 4x4) you would have several inches of air in the drivetrain.
If you had it worked on, whoever put the filter in it made a mistake. That's why calling it the 4x4 pan is one of my pet peevves, it causes people to buy the wrong filter and can destroy a box. the guy who told you "Ford occaisionally puts the 4x4 tranny in 4x2s" is, to be polite, a dufus, they aren't even similar, and not anywhere near interchangeable.
