Question 4r70w?????

Is this right or am I just thinking wrong? I went last week and got a transmission fluid and filter change. I have a 1999 Supercab with the 5.4 in it and told the guy at the parts house what it was. Well Satruday when I droped my pan I got a big surprise......the filter they gave me didn't look anything like the one in the transmission. So another trip to the parts store of course; with the old filter and pan and the new filter. When we did a search on the part number on the box it came back as a filter for the 5.4. So the guy looked at another book for a pic of the old filter and it was for the 4R70W which is the 4.6 transmission. Is the 4R70W put behind the 5.4 much or do I just have a mix-up from the factory??????
Thanks for any info!!!!!

Some 5.4s have the 4r70w tranny and some have the 4r100. My 5.4 has the 4r70w.

yeah, they put 4r70w behind the 5.4. according to everyone on here, the 4r100 is only used in lightnings, and california f 150's, and a few others. Your's isn't a mix up, you can relax

Blue_Farmer is correct.

My 2001 F-150 has the 70 behind it. I was also expecting to get the 100 but didn't. No problem anyhoo, truck runs great. I think the F-150 that has the off road package got the 100 behind the 5.4. Mine is the sport package.

Yep. Expy, Lightning, some California f150's and I think one other configuration. Everything else gets the 4R70W

Don't know for sure, but I think my 97 was built in the US and then sold in Canada. It has the E4OD (4r100) tranny (code E on the door).

No ORP, but has the LS rear too.

At least one Y2K 7700 4x4 built in 1999 came with the 4R70 (sigh).

Hi hcmg!

Could you elaborate a little on that "thud" and what was done to fix it? The reason I am asking is that my 01 shifts funny (kinda like a shudder) at part throttle. It gets worse as the angle of the vehicle changes (for instance, on the upslope of a bridge). In these cases, it almost immediately shifts into 2nd and shudders kinda hard. WOT is fine.

I plan on taking it to the dealer next week, but I would like to know what I am looking at before I get there. Thanks for any input!!

No sweat! (I did all the sweating already)

It took 3 very long trips to the dealer to get it fixed! Mine got so bad that the Check Engine light came on! Yours will to eventually.

I had the same symptoms as you. Say you make a slow right hand turn from a stop sign and in the middle of the turn you give it a little extra gas then "klunk, thud, shudder, etc..." into second it goes!

1st the dealer flushed the tranny worked for about a week.
2nd they replaced the vavle body worked for about 80 miles (40of wich were test drive miles to say it was fixed!!)
3rd they had to put in a new computer (not just a re-flash)this fixed it! it's been almost a year!

They eventually told me that the Ford technical hotline told them to try all of these things in this order when they knew it was the computer all along!

The tranny still doesn't like to shift all that great at slow speeds but from what i understand all electronic trannys exhibit this because it is electronics making the shifts not pressure as in an older style auto.

I would let them try the valve body thing first because you get a free flush out of it!! hahaha

Good luck!
