5 sp. Shifter Replacement

I have a 1997 4.2l 5 speed. The shifter has developed an extreme amount of free play and feels as if it's in neutral even when in gear. This occurs in all gears and I have missed shifts as a result of this. I am wondering if anyone has replaced their shifter because of a similar problem and if they found an aftermarket brand such as Hurst or B&M.

Rich,

The problem is not the Shifter. It sounds like the problem is in the Shift Control housing. Mine started doing like you describe and finally the shift pins broke.

Thanks for the info. What parts did you need to replace to fix it?
I guess it's off to the dealer for this one!
